Was thinking about all this BOB stuff and it got me wondering what a BOB would contain say 100 years ago. A rifle perhaps, knife, axe, and a way to make fire? I'm sure that it wasn't intended for the day the SHTF, but say a trapper running his trap line, or some one off to a high or spike camp. So lets hear it, what would be the emergency kit for the old timers.

It was called a "possibles bag".

You'd have powder, shot, a patch knife, a flint and steel, a tinderbox, some batting (for patches/bandages etc) maybe a wooden bowl or cup, some pemmican and a hudson's bay blanket. A tomohawk and large knife would also tag along. everything else you needed you'd kill/harvest/scrounge from the land.

Thing is, you'd also likely be on horseback to carry stuff like extra blankets, a dutch oven and a bag of flour for you and one for the horse. Of course, if you couldn't afford a horse you'd just tie all your gear to a mule.

get the feeling people were tougher 170 odd years ago?
