I usually hang out at the Black Powder Forum, but I have been reading The Muzzle-Loading Cap Lock Rifle, by Ned Roberts, and I wanted to see what was on the Hand Loading Forum about bullet swaging. I came across some interesting information in the book I thought I would share with you.
During the heyday of muzzle loading target shooting, rifle builders would generally include with their rifles a bullet swage for the bullets they believed the rifle shot most accurately. Here are pictures of swages from the book:
No expensive press, just a die. The bullet maker placed a lead slug of the right weight but a slightly smaller diameter than the finished bullet in the die and smacked it several times with a hammer. The process described by Ned Roberts is a bit more complicated, but that is the essentials.
