Howdy!

I'm a new shooter with less than 100 rounds under my belt. While I'm waiting for the CMP to send me my SA SG M1, I want to buy some 30-06 ammo. From reading this board and others, the preferrable ammo seems to be LC, CMP new production Federal American Eagle, Danish surplus, and Korean surplus.

My question is: What exact Internet or phone storefront should I buy from, and what ammo should I buy? I've been thinking about the aimsurplus PS Korean - A3006PMC. Is there a better source or ammo choice out there? I want most of all to be safe, followed by a good price. I shoot about 20" groups for the time being, so it doesn't have to be match grade :)

Thanks!

Jeff

Aim is a great company to deal with and the Korean ammo is pretty good stuff. I have heard that you should stay away from the Korean on the clips but the stuff in the boxes should be fine. Some of the stuff has been reported as being corrosive, not a big deal if you know about it going in but it is sold as non-corrosive.

The Danish stuff on clips is about the best milsurp I personally have used. It is usually on clips and about the same price as the Korean.

As for online venders.
Aimsurplus is great
Southern Ohio Gun is good.
Ammoman.com is wonderful and figures shipping into their prices.
CMP may very well have some surpluss 30-06. They had run out some time ago but I thought I had heard recently that they had gotten some more. Not sure though.

A lot of people like Cheaper than dirt and I have ordered from them in the past and was happy with their service but their S&H chargers can get you.

Enjoy your Garand, tis a fine rifle indeed.

Welcome aboard, jeffk!

I'm another Garand lover. I have a few more rounds under my belt, but I'm still saving up for my own CMP M1. I can only vouch for LC myself (which worked flawlessly), or I'd kick in my opinions. We'll expect a range report when you have your rifle. :D Tough job, but somebody's gotta do it.

Let me be the first to advise you to pick up a .22 rifle as well, when you get the chance. It lets you practice a whole lot at little expense and without the fatigue that the recoil of .30-06 brings. Still, I'm morally bound to give you credit for starting at the top - Garands are Just The Best!

How'd you pick your screen name?

Thanks for the replys - I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the PS headstamped Korean from AIM - it won't matter to me much if it isn't the most accurate ammo. Long as its safe to shoot.

22's are fun to shoot as well! I love the 22 ammo prices.

As for my screenname - I was lazy - no relation to that awful Internet personality jeffk that can't spell worth crap :)

Sounds good. At the thread

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41079

riverdog writes that "The Korean 30-06 ammo was manufactured by PMC (IIRC), from what I understand it's good stuff."

ReadyontheRight writes in that thread that "Korean ammo marked "PS" is not [corrosive]," and that it's reloadable. He gives a link and another reference. You can also use the Search button at the top of this page and search on the terms Korean ammo, for example. There a lot of good browsing to be had at THR this way.

I agree that .22s are fun - and they're good for ya, too!

You caught the reference to "Jeff K." in Net history ;) . Nothing lazy comes across from you, by the way. The old one was a parody created by Richard Kyanka, who has the site called "Something Awful." (in my view, it is awful indeed - WARNING: his language and topics really DO NOT match those that are found here at The High Road). There's a description of the old "spoof" character in an old version of The Jargon File, at

http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms/j.html

That site, and a more current incarnation,

http://www.jargon.8hz.com/jargon_toc.html

are places where somebody who likes words can waste an extraordinary amount of time (don't ask me how I know this :D ).
