The other day I was going thru some of my old gun cleaning kits, and came across a "Midway Bore Guide #51". My question is what gun (action) would that go to? BTW it is blue in color and appears to be plastic of some sort.

My other question is cleaning a rifle from the breech is it necessary to even use a bore guide, especially using a one piece rod? Recently I cleaned that newly acquired Kel-Tec SU-16A, using the bore snake, and when the end of it came out I noticed what appeared to be little white metal flakes following it out the end of the barrel. I know this is not normal. Now, do they make a bore guide that allows cleaning from the muzzle in a .223? Any answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated.

[To me], bolt-[or break-open] action bore guides that mount within the action itself are most useful for keeping "yucky stuff" from dropping/leaking/seeping goo & gunk into the action/magazine well. Yes, you can tip the barrel down and largely get the same thing... but what the heck.

Muzzle guides -- req'd for closed breech gas guns [e.g., Garand-based designs] and leverguns are a whole different kettle of fish. There the guides are truly functional to prevent muzzle wear.

223?

- If a bolt, see Para 1 above.
- If gas gun, again see Para 1.

Bore guides are used to keep solvents and oils out of the action.

Muzzle protectors are used for firearms that must because of the receiver design be cleaned from the muzzle (M-1 Garand, M-1 Carbine, M-14, Mini-14)

I do use a bore guide integrated into the one piece rod when cleaning my muzzle loaders, as well as when I'm loading them, I would think that some one would design such a device for .223, a funnel type device>

BTW what do you think caused the fine metal filings coming out of that Kel-Tec? I never saw them when I cleaned it before taking it out to shoot it. I just shot my usual brass cased .223/5.56 ammo that I shoot in my AR's,and mini-14. Never seen anything like that, and I've been shooting for about 55+ years.

Muzzle, chamber?

I always went with muzzle bore guides protecting the crown and exit rifling and chamber bore guides protecting the shoulder, throat, leade, etc...

Could be I'm, well, mis-guided?

apache, I hardly think you're misguided, I meant to say muzzle guard that were integrated into my one piece rods for muzzle loaders, I like your play on words. :D

Still no opinions on why the metal filings after cleaning that .223 carbine, after using that bore snake?

Bits of bore brush bristles would be my guess.*I know I've certainly seen them in my firearms. Other times, slight shavings have been present from not attending to where a rod rubs in over zealous or hurried cleaning.
