My brother in law is lookiing at two pistols, one being a P89 and one is a P95. I dont know a whole lot about Ruger autos so I need your help. The P89 is used, in good condition, with 4 mags and Hogue grips. The P95 is new in box. Both are 300 dollars. What are the differences between the two? Both are DA/SA with safety.

Both work the same, same basic design except that the P89 has an aluminum frame while the P95 has a polymer frame. Both are built like tanks and very reliable. I suggest he purchase the one that feels best in his hands, but if it was me I'd get the P95 because of it's slightly more advanced recoil system designed specifically for the plastic frame and just the fact that it's new. And yes, I do have Rugers, a P95 and a P97.

Having shot a friend's P95 at the range not too long ago, I can say that it is a damn impressive gun. I was getting decent groupings at 50 yards, and no FTF/FTE the entire range visit.

You get more bang for the buck with the P95, being new as opposed to the used P85. But first you should know why they are being offered at the same price. I'd ask that before anything else, considering how cheap 300 is for a new P95.

I have a relatively new P89 and it's a great gun. If I was going to buy another I would probably go with the P95. It's 1/2in. shorter and a little more streamlined, making it easier to pack. Haven't shot one yet, but I can only assume it shoots just as nice as the 89. The only difference in the recoil mechanism is the P89 uses a browning link style, and the 95 uses the camblock style with no direct linkage to the frame. I don't know that one is better than the other.
I know, buy both! :D

I have a P85 and had a P95 I traded. The P95 was a little more compact and a few ounces less weight, but for all practicality, it was no easier to carry. I was shooting it in IDPA, but the P85's longer sight radius was a little easier to pick up quick. I carried the P95 some when I had it, but, I really shoot my P90 better and it fits the same Milt Sparks IWB and isn't, but maybe 5 ounces heavier and holds fewer .45 rounds, so loaded weight ain't a lot different. Main reason I switched to the 9 was for the double stack mags, found them easier to stab on reloading in IDPA competition. I'd hang up the .45s single stack now and then and there doesn't look like much of a practical way to funnel the mag well on the thing. Also, the 9 has less muzzle flip and is faster back on target. But, I found that if I had a good match, no fumbled reloads, I tended to score better with the .45, go figure.

Six of one half dozen of the other. I found the P95 just as accurate as the P85 (same as P89). Like somebody said, which ever one you like the feel of the best. I sorta like the P85, too, for the ability to put Hogue grips on it. It matches the ergos of my P90 and I love Hogue's grips on P series Rugers, feel great and index quick for the draw. My hand falls in the same place every time with 'em. I had one of those Handall slip ons on the P95 and it worked okay, but I think I prefer the Hogue grips on the P85 better. That's personal tastes, may not be your opinion. You really need to play with both guns and figure it out for yourself. Which ever you pick, they're both equally functional guns IMHO.

As MCgunner said, it's your pick, but it would be the P95 all the way for me. I put many rounds through the early one with not one malfunction, and the new ones are even better.(improved grip)

I'd opt for the P95 b/c it's slightly smaller and more compact, though still a little bulky for concealed carry. It's a slightly more refined gun. Plus, if you get one of the new ones, you can get the textured grips, which are much better than the original grips, IMO. Also, if you so desire you can get the new P95 with an accessory rail.
