I bought a set of Pachmayr grips for my S&W 686, and they came with 4 small sticky-backed lead weights, but no instructions or reference to what or how to use them.

I am guessing counter-weights, but can any one offer advice or instructions on how to use them correctly?

Thanks.

DOUBLEHELIX:: Please accept my apology for Texas10mm, he's apparently having a rough morning.

Yes, I believe the weights are intended as an aid to balance. A quick check of thier website or an email to the company will get you instructions on intended use.

That's a new one for me. I've never gotten such with any of mine. Then again I pretty much buy only the compact version of their grips to replace chunkier stock ones.

Stick them on your forehead.

Hehe... no worries. I tried them on my forehead, and they didn't help a bit!!!

I went to their website already (they are a division of Lyman), but no help there. I could send an email I suppose.

Now that I think of it, I got some with my gripper set also. They aren’t countering anything, and I have no plans to make them.

I would throw them in my junk parts box (you have one DON'T YOU?) An L frame 686 doesn't need no stinkin' weights - it's a beautifully balance revolver.

Yes they are. I recently picked up the 686+ pro 3" and have been working it over.
Chamfered chambers
Reamed the throats for uniformity
Polished chambers
Recut the forcing cone
Squared off the muzzel face
Recut the crown at 11°
Really nice black/grey VZ grips
Polish and de-burr the innards
Wilson spring kit

Still have to decide on sights.

I bought a set of Pachmeyer Renegade laminated wood grips last year and found the same thing in my package. There were 4 metal squares marked 1/4oz

You are suppose to swallow them, after one day you will have some lead in yourazz to help you handle the recoil of your revolver!

Mine are in the package still. I could not figure out their purpose. There are no recesses in the grips that would hold one. Other than taping it to the outside I don't know how you could use them as some kind of counter weight or what ever

Several grip makers do this, and have for years. I had forgotten but got some weird steel or zinc trapezoids with some wood Hogue stocks going on 20 years ago. They made zero sense, didn't fit anywhere. The stocks had instructions which did not mention them either. Saw others at the time as well for rubber revolver stocks.

Note, indeed, the ones above say Fe so they are iron, not even steel. Weird.

Forgot about it until now.

And... still don't know. Eagerly waiting for an answer now though!

Note in the first picture, above, you see a flat inside the grip. Put that grip on the revolver and see if there is an area on the flat where a weight could be stuck and not interfere with the working of the revolver.

If those are placed inside those grips they will interfere with the mainspring. Hell, the screw Pachmayr uses can interfere with a Wilson power rib spring because Pach put it in a slightly different location (closer to the mainspring) than the factory grips screw. I've seen that happen on quite a few S&Ws with Pachs installed. There's not really any free space to use inside the grip panels. Besides, a 1/4 oz. of weight isn't going to make any significant balance difference on a revolver with more than 2 in. of barrel screwed on it.

Jonesy814 - thank you for the photo. That pretty much shows that there is not enough room. That mainspring must have room to flex. Someone needs to call Pachmayr and ask for an explanation on the weights. In the meantime - toss them in your junk box.
