I'm planning on getting a 629 4" in 44 Magnum and a 500 S&W 4" version. I don't reload so will be using factory ammunition. Will they hold up to heavy factory loads like a Ruger will? For the 629, I will probably shoot mostly 240 grain loads. For the 500, it will probably get a steady diet of 440 grain loads from Corbon and a few Hornady loads.

Also, even though the 500 is probably too much for self-defense, would the 275 grain Barnes bullet load from Corbon still be too much gun for self-defense?

With standard 240gr. loads, the 629 should hold up fine. The Ruger Redhawk is a better bet if you plan on shooting thousands of them, or using some of the hotter loads from time to time.

As for a .500 S&W for self-defence... the mind boggles! Huge muzzle-blast and flash, nasty recoil (remember that accurate, repeated shots are usually needed for SD), and a very heavy weight to tote around. NOT a good idea, IMHO...

The M629 will have no problems with a 240 grainer.
Untill they come out with a .500 Special loading, the M500 is too much gun in a SD role unless it's against large wild animals. It is realy just a specialty revolver right now using factory loads.

Yea but, hit em anywhere and they ain't comin back for more!

Can you imagine one of those just being shot at you whether it's hit's you or not? LMAO  Heck, I'd run like the truth runs from John Kerry and that's pretty darn fast! :D

The damn concussion's gonna kill you anyway!

The 29/629 is not a weak gun and there was never a problem with standard 44 magnum loads.

The problem came when silohette (sp) shooters started running a steady diet of 300 grain heavy loads through them. The newer ones with the endurance package after 1989 I believe, can handle those just fine also.

For me the 240 grain JSPs are about as much recoil as I care to deal with and prefer 44 specials, so the guns are a lot stronger than I am.

They should hold up pretty good for you too.
