You'll have fun with it, I'm sure! Keep the loads on the light side though. A year or so ago I picked up an unfired brasser 1851 in .44 (locally/Armslist) for $100. Not a short barrel though. Date code put it at 2003 IIRC. Every brasser I ever handled had a surprisingly smooth action.

One nice thing is the cylinder and barrel assy will fit and function on the 7.5" steel frame.

The cylinder and barrel of my Pietta brasser 1851 won't function on a more recently made 1851 steel frame without some fitting. Would take some mods on the hand and probably the bolt as well. YMMV

Bummer. Guess mine are close enough in date. All the parts fit like they were made for it and the timing and lock up are tight.

The OP's revolver is of recent manufacture (CF/2010) so he should not have a problem. I have a Pietta G&G (CN/2015) that will accept parts from at least four other steel Pietta Navies (all .36, though), and vice-versa, and I have not encountered any problems. IMO, Pietta Navies after ~2000 are like Legos.

I thought about getting a replacement steel frame and transfer the internals. Cheapest and virtually only ones I've found are near 200 with tax and shipping. 50-60 more and you can buy the whole pistol. Thought I might find one good enough for parts at at places like GB but none but for sale and some of those were going for 300 plus and they were just repro Piettas. Cabelas has the steel frame at 269 NIB, 259 with easy to get coupon. Wait till they go on sale and they'll be 249. If the coupon is useable then, 239. Free ship. I saw cylinders going up to 70. Cabelas are 49 all day, 39 with coupon. Auctions get nutty.

I've had luck as well. I have a pietta 1851 Yank snubby .44 that will take a .36 cylinder and .36 sheriff barrel and they fit like a glove. But that 2003 brasser 1851 .44 will not swap parts nicely. Surprised me too, but the brasser is a nice gun. Will plug nice holes in rabbits with light bp loads.

Search ebay for Pietta!
There were only brass frames when I looked just now but I have seen steel ones this summer.
Theoretically, ebay says no frames but they still show up - often listed as "cylinder holder."
Good Luck!

Just got to thinking about it. Both the 36 and 44 are same size overall. All the internals are same. So gave it a try. Bingo.

Another point in favor of Sam Colts pistols is the interchangeable nature of the design. The old boy was crafty...
