Peep Sight or Scope?

I have a few Winchester 94's that I need to put decent sights on. I like the handiness of the little rifles and hesitate to burden them but I like hitting the target. Don't plan on shots over 150 yards. I'm torn between the XS/AO Ghost Ring peep or a low power scope - something like the Leupold M8-2.5x. Any thoughts?

I had the same decision on my M94. I went with a Leupold mount and an inexpensive,lightweight 4x fixed power scope, and spent less money than I would have on a quality Lyman or AO peep sight. Peeps are good accurate sights, but a good low powered scope is superior IMHO.

Top eject Winchesters and scopes go to together like bread and paste. If you decide to scope, check out Joe over at realguns.com. He's working on a 94 as his current project.

I would go with both a 4 power scope and peep sights. Get a good side mount for top-eject or a top mount scope that's high enough to see under. This combo works great and allows you to switch if you desire as well as try both out. The peep works just fine for me, but I've got good eyes and experience with the peep too. The scope is a luxury and is mostly effective out beyond 75-100 yards. Inside of that, I'd rather use a peep.

I have an AO ghost ring on my Trapper. Works great. I felt the same way about putting a scope on it, it takes the handiness away from the rifle. I did try the AO scout mount and didnt like it for the same reason. The AO ghost ring is small, solid, doesnt hang up on things, and doesnt take away from the gun. I had a Lyman reciever sight on another Trapper, and while it worked ok, it tended to hang up on things and always looked like it would break off. If you have one of the newer Winchesters, it goes right on using the rear scope mount holes. Easy to do by yourself and is about a 5 minute job.

I got a Lyman tang sight for my Winchester. It just looks right. To me a scope and a Mod 94 just don't go together, but thats just me.

I had a williams peep sight on my old 94 30/30 and it worked great for hunting in the michigan woods. I really liked it a lot. I had one put onto my wifes 9422 and it has been very good. It really improved her shooting skills much more so then a scope.

I would do it again in a heartbeat. No scopes for the 94's.

Yes.

If you keep the original front sight and add an aperture sight (either a receiver or tang sight), the original middle sight gets in the way. If you add a higher front sight, it won't -- but then why keep the old sight, since it's useless now?

I have an M94 with a Williams receiver sight and a Lyman front sight -- I took off the old sight. I also have a pre-'64 Winchester Model 70 with an emergency receiver sight snuggled under the scope. Again it was necessary to remove the original rear sight.

Brownells sells blanks which you can insert in the barrel dovetail slot, if you don't like the way it looks when you remove the middle sight. Or, you can just cut the sight off at the dovetail, and leave the original dovetail filling the slot.
