When discussing class 3 purchases, I have seen people make reference to a "pending" status. Can someone tell me what that means? I'm assuming it is a status designation within the ATF. Can I make an iquiry directly with them, or does the dealer need to make the inquiry? Does it indicate anything more than a confirmation that they are working on my application (i.e. does it typically happen soon before approval)?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

You can call directly. If I remember correctly you need to know the dealers name and the serial number on the item you're inquiring about.

Check out NFA Tracker to get a pretty good gauge of the timeframe for your stamp. The Reports page has good summaries of the times. It looks like the stamps approved in the last 6 months are averaging about 190 days from sending the info in to receiving the stamp.

If you call you can find out who the Examiner is and when the check was cashed and when it went pending, but they can't tell you how much longer you'll have to wait.

For mine, the timeframe was approximately as follows: I sent the info in, a week later they had cashed the check, 2 or 3 weeks later it went Pending, and about five months after that it was Approved. But that was over a year ago now.

There's no such thing as a "class three purchase" you can't buy a rate of taxation.

Pending means it's in the stack.
