I'm on the hunt for a reasonably priced, single shot, percussion pistol, for plinking, and probably nothing more. I'm thinking 45, or smaller, and have my eye one a Traditions Crocket pistol, in 32. I had a horrendous experience with one of their flintlocks, but am willing to forget that, seeing as I'm convinced finding an inexpensive flintlock that woks reliably, is sorta futile. Any other suggestions ? Also am looking at a Lyman Great Plains in 45.

if you already have a bp rifle, maybe choose pistol of the same caliber.
-----or-----
The bp cap and ball revolvers sold by Cabelas and others are relatively inexpensive, high quality guns. Can be shipped directly to you. Very fun to shoot/plink/compete with. My '58 Remington is one of my favorite shooters.

The traditions Crocket is known for a terrible trigger pull, probably the same for the frontier and kentucky. The Lyman is better, but still not great. I understand the Pedersoli guns are much better, but as always quality has a price.

I have toyed with the idea of getting the Crocket pistol and switching out the lock to one with a fly and then fitting a single set trigger. But by that dollar value, I could get a Pedersoli. It is a shame, because I understand the barrels are tack drivers.

I have an 1858 Pietta, I've tried to take good care of it, it sorts a speck of rust (really annoys me) in one of the chambers that doesn't want to budge, all in all a fine pistol, even holds up to my abuse. I was wanting a single shot of the sake of aesthetics. I have a TC Renegade in 50, but seldom shoot it, I picked up used, not in the best of condition. I don't really want to cater towards it, I want a pistol in a manageable, efficient caliber, an am leaning towards the 32. I'm not going to go hunting with it or anything.

Well I guess I just want to like the Crockett, meh, I sorta knew it wasn't top notch. I'll try and look elsewhere. The Lyman looks nice, but I'm sorta drawing blank past Pedersoli, is that the nicest production pistol (single shot, percussion) out there ? Or is there better production stuff I'm not aware of.

Pedersoli's probably the best of the production guns, on average anyway. I'm sure you'll get somebody talking about their stinker. None of the companies are 100%.

Lymans are very functional but don't generally have the same fit and finish. I like their kits though, then it's the best of both worlds.

I have a percussion Pedersoli Kentucky pistol in .45 caliber that I built from a kit I ordered from Dixie Gun Works and it is probably the most accurate pistol I own. You can buy them in flint and fully assembled either way and even if you possess only average woodworking skills you can have a very nice finished product. I shoot a patched round ball with 30 grains of Pyrodex "P" and can trim branches from tree limbs at 15 yards using the stock open sights.

It depends mostly on what your budget it. There are some really nice and some really expensive guns out there. I understand you don't need a well tuned modern Gov 1911 looking percussion competition inline.

The Tc patriot was a great gun for target and plinking. There is a guy in OK making some nice looking underhammer pistols in various calibers for about $250. They are listed on the big gun auction every few months. From 32 to 50.

The Traditions underhammer target gun will set you back $1,000m if you can even find one, since they are not imported to the US. The Feinwerkbau underhammer will set you back $1,500 or more, also if you can even find one.

Check the Pedersoli guns, on the Cherry's web site. Keep in mind, that Pedersoli also sells different grades of quality. Good, better and best.

Why not look for an old CVA pistol in .45 caliber? Parts are plentiful and you can tune the locks or replace them and make a good shooter out of it.

Have you seen the Prospector before? It's a .44 that was made by ASM and possibly others and imported by CVA, Traditions, Navy Arms, etc. Fires same rounds as your Pietta Remington and you can load very light for plinking.
