Picked up a used MKIII Hunter today

Glad it was still there. Didn't want to disclose the location yesterday but Hoffmans in CT. had it. Its in excellent condition. Looks like its hardly been fired. 6 7/8 Stainless Fluted barrel(don't know if they all have that) wood handles. One downside is it only came with one Magazine. Have to pick up a few more. Anyhow, I paid $329 and I feel like I did pretty good.


The Quality of this 22 is pretty impressive. Weather looks good tomorrow and hope to get to the range. I cannot believe I am this excited about a 22..

I've its predecessor MKII Slabsides and the 22/45MKIII Hunter. Yours runs about $400 here with I think $380 best price I've ever seen new. I didn't want the MKIII because I'd have to buy new mags -- I've a bunch of MKII and 22/45 mags from when Ruger sold the parts to assemble a mag for $9.

I didn't know the mags for the Mark III were different from the Mark II. Why would Ruger do that, and what's the dif? Both take 10 rounds.

A number of years ago I bought an AMT Lightning .22LR that had a Clarke trigger, Millett sights, Pachmayr wrap-around grips and a groove for a scope mount. I had to buy about three of them to find one that worked. Quality control was more than a little spotty, but once you got one that worked, it tended to work just as well, if not better, than the Rugers.

Good buy on a darned good pistol. Two mags are nice, but I often only take one out for shooting.

The difference is in the MKIII thumb activated mag catch vs. the heel release of the MKII.

MKIII mags will work in a MKII but the catch protrusion tends to hang on the frame when you remove them. The MKII mags lack the catch protrusion and thus won't lock in MKIII.

Two mags is nice, but 20 is better so I can shoot 200 rounds at the range without standing in 95+ degree heat stuffing mags, I load them up in air conditioned comfort before I go shooting.

Be sure to not use the slide release lever to release the slide. This will wear out the feature that holds the bolt open on the last shot. The manual says to use the "slingshot" method to release the slide when chambering a round. In other words, just pull back the bolt and let it go.
Don't ask me how I know this.
