[Pics] S&W Model 34 pics...and need advice.

I have quite a few J-frames and bought a Model 34 for cheap practice with the trigger pull. This is to share pictures of the great Model 34-2 I purchased this weekend (see below)and also to ask advice. This is my first 22 lr revolver.

I bought the gun, gave it a cursory cleaning, and then put approximately 300 rounds down range. Afterward, the barrel was quite fouled with lead and so filthy that it was hard to run a copper brush through. Should I give it a quick brush out every 100 rounds or so? What do you usually do? I clean my .38, 9mm and .45s more more or less often, but usually shoot copper jacketed rounds.

After how many rounds do you clean your 22 lr revolvers? Any tips? It was quite difficult to clean the lead out of this barrel. That aside, this gun is great fun...I could shoot it all day.

As for cleaning, I'm of the mind that the less, the better. I would run a bore snake, rather than cleaning rod, through the barrel and chambers only when leading gets to be a problem (accuracy degradation, tough extraction). You might switch to plated bullets as that will reduce barrel leading.

I absolutely agree that less scrubbing is better. I could not even get a bore snake (the copper tip of the rope) down the barrel after 300 rounds. The chambers and forcing cone were clean. I plan to shoot this little gun a lot...that's how I justified the purchase It sounds like I need to run the snake every 50 rounds or buy jacketed rounds, or both.

34-1 .22 caliber LR. Sorry, its 0340 hrs as I write this; and I
can't awaken the household in order too take pic's~!

FWIW, I can't give any advice as too ammo choice; for I don't
(and won't) ever shoot this firearm, as it joins several other J-
frame S&W's as "SAFE QUEENS".

You might try a different brand of ammo. I had this same problem with Remington bulk pack on my .22 revolver (just in case your shooting them).

The lead apparently was soft on the ones I had and leading was what I would call severe and pre-mature. Other brands may have harder lead and not foul the bore so quickly.

On the ones I mention I would get notable leading within 50 rounds and needed to clean it. Problem solved with different ammo.

I appreciate the replies. It sounds like it may be the ammo. I fired about 100 Winchester white box and 200 Remington bulk hollow points.

I suppose, it will create the same kind of residue as described above.
I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.

Well, I may have to look into some brushing, or better go and try to return the ammo? May not be possible ...

What's a recommended ammo to shoot cleaner?

Edit:

I just became obvious. I checked in the safe and found a couple of boxes American Eagle which I got from the seller. Those are copper plated.

On the Remington I can groove the lead bullet with my finger nail easily, that's how soft it is. The AE ammo is hard covered at the bullet and no way to groove or scratch off the lead the same way ....
