Pictures of non game animals

Back in my post #242 I mentioned all the hawk activity around the house this summer. Was in the garage this afternoon and heard a hawk call that sounded close to me. Walked out onto the driveway and he was right up in a tree in the woods right next to the driveway. Went in and grabbed the camera with the telephoto on it yet again, (that camera has gotten a lot of use this summer). Got a few shots just standing in the driveway pointing the camera up at the hawk, who didn't seem to mind me below him. It was still there 10 minutes later. Here's one of the shots.. IMG_8973.JPG

I have not got the camera out yet for woody woodpecker but the other day I was sitting outback in the pool enclosure and I had just finished filling the bird feeder so the Cardinals and doves and finches could get some lunch. Well the crows showed up and told woody it was time to go but woody said no dice. 3 of em went after woody woody gave back as good as he got when it was over woody was still on his limb one crow was on the ground with a messed up wing and the others were gone yeah and the squirrels were gone too. I am gonna get some good pictures of my new backwoods hero for posting here.

41 pound Boston Terrorist on the open range.

It's funny you call him a terrorist.
My bride now has this feist/rat terrier.
I'm helping her train him for squirrels.
My nephew calls him a terrorist as well.

Have not had any photo ops recently on non-game animals, unless you count out of season animals as being non-game. Was downloading trail cam pix recently and came across this one. It's from one of my older trail cams that I can't get the time & date set on it, but it was within the last 4 or 5 days. I've seen deer & fox in fairly close proximity to each other, but never in front of a trail cam until now. These two are both currently out of season so I guess they qualify as non-game, but only temporarily... Cool photo anyway. WLD_2437.JPG .

Technically not game animals because these axis deer wander in my no hunting property owner association (along with a bunch of whitetails). Have seen up to 9 total at one time, they come around every morning shortly after sun up.

Sorry for poor quality photos, my camera shots are taken from inside a screened in porch. These guys are skittish about people.

Also, the fence is my yard fence…deer are outside it, in case folks are wondering..

Going through some old photos over the weekend. From 2008-2012, we lived in a lovely niche carved out of the PA woods. We had a big variety of birds at the feeder(also a whitetail fawn and a few black bears). That was in what seems another lifetime…. Anyway, finding these has inspired me to get my feeders back up, but I doubt I’ll have the same success in NE, to say nothing of town/city environment…

Those Axis deer are cool; and I've never seen one in real life. I can sure relate to problems with photos taken through a screen. Had a snowy owl on the roof back in Nov. 2020 and my shots were taken through a screen and came out somewhat lacking in quality. These pictures have been on THR back then, but I forgot what thread. Snowy owls are scarce in winter on the south side of Lake Ontario. They live in the arctic tundra areas of northern Canada but some years they winter as far south as the northern U.S. during rough winters up north. Got a few through the screen, but it affected the auto-focus and I didn't have time to mess with that, as I'm not a professional photographer. IMG_0278.JPG .. Discovered that less zoom through that screen meant better pix and got a couple like this before the owl decided to take wing. IMG_0281.JPG .. Definitely a non-game critter and one that I may only see once every few years.

While going through the bird pictures here on the computer for the snowy owl photos in my previous post I also came upon some of a northern saw whet owl, another non-game deal. Got them in June 2022 right in the woods next door to me. They roost in trees during the day and if you are quiet and not moving fast you can sometimes walk right by them without them flying away. They are quite small for an owl; their body size has been compared to that of a 12 oz. soda can. Spotted this one and quietly walked by. It was at eye level to me and less than 10 feet away. Only had to go about 25 yards to the house to get the camera. Luckily he was still there when I returned. Got several pictures and then quietly backed off. Here's the best shot: IMG_5934.JPG ..
