Between black coffee, and shiftn' gears
The temperature had dropped to 46* last night and was supposed to hit a high of 70* or so today. I was sipping coffee on my back deck this morning thinking about the homework, the domestic chores, exams, practical labs and …and…well rested after 4 hours sleep I decided I needed to re-charge my batteries. I have to do that from time to time.

Now folks normally read where I grabbed a shotgun, or shoot handguns- today I used a rifle. Yes you read that right I typed “rifleâ€.

Sure my CCW was along as usual, I never un-holstered it. Sometimes it is about piddlin’ and plinkin’.

As I get older the more I appreciate simple and function – and fun. I had the use of a New Marlin 60DL with Walnutone [tm] finish. I may do a review on this Rifle later, for now this is about piddlin’.

Now this gun had not been fired yet – so since I sight guns as I intend to use them, I sighted it in standing. Since this one does not have a sling, or studs for one, I did what I did as a kid, a length of rawhide with slip knots works.

Now my eyes are giving me fits, and I don’t have ‘scripted shooting glasses, - nonetheless – sighted in just fine. I use a sling to steady myself when I shoot, so to check for longer distances, I knelt to double check. I figured the Win X 22LR would work; these have consistently worked across the board in a variety of rim fire firearms.

Walking along levees, reservoirs, farm roads with safe backstops, big wide ditches I walked shot and piddled. Spent shot shells, sticks, dirt clods, then I tossed a couple of golf balls in the deep recesses of a ditch. Folks I used to play golf, shooting golf balls are a whole lot more fun and productive, than hitting a golf ball, finding it, and hitting it again…and again, and…

I haven’t lost the touch, granted a bit rusty. Too many shotgun shells over the years and for some reason I didn’t have a problem keeping the gun still. Okay granted the sights were a bit fuzzy so maybe I really couldn’t tell – I was able to focus on the targets and hit them…and shotgunning came into to play hitting a moving golf ball. I guess I reverted back to my youth and how I taught new shotgunners- remove sights off a BB Gun and shoot ping pong balls…

Now I am a one shot – one target kind of guy, nothing says I can’t “write my initials†with rim fire against a dirt bank as fast as I can pull a trigger now is there?

Well since it is not PC to shoot bottles off a fence…I “just happen to have†a dozen eggs and pallets make good “fencesâ€. I started of at about 15 yards and backed up after each shot, I wish I’d brought more eggs; I was doing good and having too much fun.

I had no malfunctions, any misses were my fault. Sometimes I just couldn’t get focused; allergies didn’t help the eyes either. Only problem I had – was running out of ammo, and time. I gave serious thought to making a run to a bait shop for ammo, and snacks – I really needed to get back home.

Sometimes a person just has to go piddlin’…..

I didn’t grow up – I just got bigger. – Art.

Regards,

Steve
