Pietta 1851 Navy .36 And Confederate Cousins

Interesting that the bid history shows the same buyer for both. Someone with a suspicious mind might suspect a shill bidder at work.

I was wondering about that, also. Whatever. Their transactions, and their considerations. I would have not bid upon those pistols at anywhere near that price. Just bought a Pietta 1851 Navy BNIB from Cabela's for $180 and with a bit of home brew chemicals I could have come up with the same. I really disdain folks that defarb a pistol to appear to be a period pistol, even if it is for a re-enactor piece. YMMV. If it ever was put on the market, some unsuspecting folks could think it was the real McCoy.

I know there are folks who think differently. Your call.

Desidog - Patina on originals has developed over many years, it was not there when the cowboy plunked his hard earned cash down on the counter at the general store.

If you like that look great, BUT.....

The actors in Hell on Wheels do not look 150 years old so why should their guns look 150 years old?!!!

We are meant to see the play as if we were watching it unfold in its own time with people and props appearing as they would during that time.

The prop man is correct in issuing a new or just slightly used gun as folks took care of their tools back then.

Now if the prop man had them carrying a Berretta 92, wielding an AK or driving a Humvee (with or without patina,) there would be a problem.

Nah. I don't like the fact that there's brass frames and guns with the Pietta writing down the side of the barrel; not that the guns appear "new." Seeing a brass framed 1860 is just about as bad as if they did pull a Beretta 92FS... neither one existed!

I agree that a brass-framed 1860 is a very poor substitute for a G&G! I also agree with EK's opinion about the time frame insofar as the patina and how it pertains to the movie genre.

Are you good to go with the obvious Italian proofmarks and the date code on the frame and the barrel, as in Uberti with the manufacturer marking in an "unobtrusive" area insofar as any movie scenario?

If so, good for you. If the viewers of the series are that good insofar as catching those minor details and complain, well, they are better than most.

Personally, I think "Hell On Wheels" is a poor series. That's just my opinion, and I gave up on it a year or so ago.

FINALLY!!!
But too late for me too.
I gave up 6 months ago and bought a used one on GB for $175.

I think you probably got a good deal because (AFAIK) Pietta only started marketing them in 2015 [CN] insofar as the grip style shows. Have never seen one with the "tail" grip-frame (2014 [CM]) or earlier.

Good on you, sir!

Jim

Mine is "CI" (2012) but the Cabela's box is not marked "Griswold and Gunnison" but rather "Confederate Navy .36" with model number CFT36.

I think the auction was listed as simply "Pietta Brass Frame Navy .36" but it has been awhile and the transaction is no longer in my GB wins list.

Luckily the auction had a picture with the link to tip me off that it was a G&G style or I might have passed it by.

It appears to be the same half round style as the contemporary Cabela's G&G pictured on their website but mine does have the "Pietta Tail" shape to the grip.

So you got the now somewhat "rare" Pietta "tail" gripset, as in it is no longer produced.

Good on you. I doubt we'll ever see them again as new.

I love the fit to the hand with the "tail", even though others disdain the look.

You need to post a pic, sir. Would love to see it, just for my selfish mind.

Thanks for your response!

Maybe a picture this weekend, Jim.

I babysit my grandkids during the week.

The good news is that both my daughter and her husband have jobs.

The bad news is they both have jobs and only get to see their kids coming and going and weekends.

I, on the other hand, get to play all day five days a week!!!

Now if I could just get up off the floor after playing like I did in my thirties, everything would be fine.

Yeah I know that feeling all too well! Enjoy them while you can because they'll be all grown up before you know it.

On a black powder related note have been thinking about getting that Pietta Griswold and Gunnison that's on sale at Cabelas. For some reason I have always had a thing for Confederate revolvers ever since High Standard came out with their "Arms of the Confederacy" collection with the Schneider & Glassick, the Griswold & Gunnison, and the Leech & Rigdon.

Still on sale! But I bet it won't last for long unless Cabela's is bent upon reducing their inventory or contracts prior to Bass Pro.

{I like your comment about "on a black powder elated note". Chuckle. Glad you omitted the "r".)

EK, good for you! Let us know how the brasser trigger is. Mine could be better.

Are you pleased?

Want to know.

Wow that is a [CI] "tail" pistol? Hang on to that collector item. Maybe...

Thanks Jim, I'm very pleased!

It has a smooth "4 click" action and lock up on all six cylinders.

The trigger pull is crisp but not really very light.

The trigger is pretty narrow as are my other Pietta's and I prefer a wider surface to pull against.

I always end up with a group to the left with a narrow trigger but I have not had this one out yet.

I also slice my drives so maybe I need a wider faced golf club.
