Just turned 18 and I want to carry my sub 2000 9mm in my truck because I can fold it in half and store it under the driver seat in case I need it. I'm confused as to whether or not I could legally carry it in my vehicle in Texas. I am a Texas resident and can legally own a firearm but I wonder if I could get in trouble for having this rifle in my vehicle because it fires a pistol caliber and I am under 21. Would I get arrested for having the ammo?

It's a rifle.
Legal to carry a rifle concealed or in plain view.
Caliber is immaterial.
Don't be irresponsible and just store it under your car seat, use a locking device of some sort.

Would I get arrested for having the ammo?
Being that you can legally purchase ammunition for a rifle, no.

Thank you. It's the possession of the 9mm pistol ammo that I was worried about. I just want to make sure.

When I was under 18 ( 70's) I couldn't purchase handgun ammo, I could purchase 30-06 but not 22:). Recently I purchased some 410 and I had to show my ID. The local sheriff was a friend of the family and he knew I carried a 12ga and 357 in my Jeep and never said anything.

In the '70's you most certainly could purchase .22 for use in rifles if you were 18 or older....I did.;)
Federal law restricts handgun ammunition sales to those 21 and older.
For ammunition that can be used in either rifle or handgun, the seller should ask "Is this for a handgun or long gun?" I'm 62 and only WalMart asks for my ID and still asks the question even though it doesn't matter. BTW....the best answer is "Machine Gun".

It is perfectly legal for someone under age 21 to purchase 9mm for use in a rifle.

I know some Wal Marts here in Wisconsin would ask " handgun or rifle " if you were 18,19 or 20. If you said rifle they would sell the handgun ammo to you.

The Western Auto we went to simply wouldn't sell me 22's, my father would have to be there. I would still pay but needed an adult present. I usually purchased 22shorts for squirrels around the house and 22lr for going to the woods.

Does any state actually prohibit 18-year-olds from possessing a handgun?

I know that Federal law prohibits Federal Firearms License holders from selling handguns to 18-year-olds, but this is a regulation on the license holders, not on the 18-year-old citizens. I also know there is no federal law that prohibits 18-year-olds from the possession of handguns. Is there a state law that prohibits possession?

I mean... How else would you get one besides a private sale or a gift from a relative or something? I know in Texas there aren't any laws against someone under 21 having a handgun on their property but idk about carrying one in their vehicle which is my situation. Kind of

You're fine. No reason to bother anyone.

Classic example of the ridiculousness of so many gun laws. They're passed by people who know nothing about firearms and you end up with strange situations like being able to buy ammo if it's going to be used in one type of firearm but not another. An 18 year old can legally own a handgun and yet not be able to buy ammunition for it, for example, 19 year old buys a Hi Point 9mm carbine and is gifted the Hi Point 9mm pistol by a relative. Can buy a box of 9mm ammo only for the carbine, not the handgun. Same ammo. Nuts.

OP isn't buying or possessing a handgun, he asked about ammunition.
And yes, there are states that have laws prohibiting all sales of firearms, not just handguns to those under age 21.
But, those states aren't what this thread is about, its about the legality of the OP purchasing 9mm ammo for a rifle.

No, its not "kind of".....no Texas law prohibits you from possessing, carrying concealed or openly a rifle.

Gun Control Act of 1968 originally required a firearm or ammunition purchaser to be 21. The law was later amended to age 18 for rifles, shotguns and their ammunition.

Yeah they did that dumb stuff on the east coast too.

It's not dumb, it's called complying with federal law.
Dumb would be selling 9mmP, .45acp or .357 and NOT asking an under 21 buyer if it was for a handgun or long gun.

***and "handgun ammo"? Virtually every cartridge commonly used in handguns.....there's also a rifle chambered in that same round.

Should I contact my local police to make sure?
Your local police aren't any more likely to know the details and nuances of federal ammunition law than anyone here. If it ever became an issue, (and it won't) you can easily and clearly prove that the ammo is for a rifle.

All Walmarts, not just WI. We also ask birthdate and key it into the register. If you go through the self-check, it prompts the self check host to come over and do it.

Decades ago I bought a brick of 22LR at WallMart, the clerk asked if it was for a handgun or rifle. I replied it says on the box Long Rifle. She blushed and completed the sale saying she had not looked at the box. My tongue was bleeding from biting it so hard.

So, other than being a wiseguy what did you prove? They don't make Long Pistol rounds.
