Got my tax refund check the other day so I decided to place an order for a Sig 556 today. I never thought I would until I saw the Commando version for the first time. I went to my local gun shop and they contacted their Sig rep and low and behold they can get me a Sig Commando with the Magpul side folding stock and traditional 551 style handguard within 8 weeks. The rep couldn't get me the green furniture only black, ironically that's what I would prefer anyway.

I don't have a pic of the rifle yet obviously but here's a pic I lifted off the web to show what I'm getting.

Just be warned that the folding stock doesn't actually lock folded. It uses VERY light spring pressure...meaning it just flops around.

I plan on adding a decent red dot to it but I really want to leave it pretty basic, I'm not much into the ubber tactical mall ninja look.

how much did you pay for your sig? I got my tax rebate as well and trying to decide between a .45 handgun or an assualt rifle. The Sig looks sweet although i would get it with the non-folding stock. Who sells them the cheapest online?

I always see this rifle pop up and I've also seen the swiss arms sig-550, they look so similar, but huge price difference.

is the 556 a variant of the swiss arms 550?

I'm somewhat puzzled by the poster's statements. The 556 Commando is a limited-edition item only available through a certain distributor, to the best of my knowledge. I do not believe that one could order it straight from SIG. And so far I've never heard of one coming with black handguards. Strange...

The Sig rep said that this was the Commando and would be the same the one Impactguns is selling only it would be black not green. I was standing right there while the gunshop manager talked to him on the phone and I made sure they new they knew that it was the Commando that I wanted and not any of the other versions. The rep verified that it would have the Magpul sidefolding stock and the 551 forend and they better deliver on that or they owe me my deposit back. Trust me I don't want any 556 other than the Commando version and if they send me anything else I won't be paying for it.

Guess I'll find out for sure in a few weeks when it arrives:rolleyes:

I'll probably stop by the gunshop today anyway and drop off something for consignment so I'll have them verify again. I'll also try to get some more details about this gun and post them here if anyone is interested.

Congrats. That's a good move. I've got this optics ready version slowly "going commando" as they say. Green grip and some addtl. bits still to come...

I actually had to postpone my order, a sudden multi-thousand dollar bill for car repairs this week means I won't be buying any guns for a few months. Well at least nothing expensive like a Sig 556:(

Sorry to hear that partner but hopefully you'll get that Sig soon. You weren't hurt were you? Car Wreck?

shot a 556 the other day, boy was it nice. Sweet shooting gun. Had an ACOG on it that I really liked and that would look sexy as hell on my S&W AR15... if only I had more $$.

Now the question is what can I get instead to cover the deposit I put on the 556. I may be moving back east in a month or so and I need to buy something from the gun shop where I ordered the Sig before I move away. They won't give me my deposit back but they said I could use it as credit towards something else. Its only $200 but maybe I can find something for that much. They have a beautiful Spanish 1893 Mauser in 7mm there for $200, maybe I'll get that:rolleyes:

I'll do a thread on the topic.
