Was on vacation this week, trying to catch up on honey-do list and get some things done around the house. Decided to go to the gun club this evening and shoot some trap games. It has been about 3 years since I had played any and I don't shoot many trap birds during the year, maybe 300 total this year as I shoot mostly skeet. There was only about 2 guys there that new me so I got quite a few looks of who is the new guy. :scrutiny:

There was about 16 people shooting this evening and their program started with 10 birds from the 16. I squirted a target right off the bat, but was in a shoot-off for 9, didn't win that one. Next was a 16 yard bushwacker and I managed to stay until the end and we decided to spit the pot before we shot it all up. Then another bushwacker and they inverted the field, first guy last. I made it down to 6 shooters and got picked off. The next they called the green weenie shoot, 10 targets at the 23 yard line and one target is bright green and everyone throws a dollar into the pot for whoever breaks it. This was the 3rd week and there was over $50 in the pot. The guy right after me called for his bird and got the green one, and missed it. It will roll over to next week. I ended up missing 2 birds and was out of it.

Next up was a draw protection from the 27 yard line, I was paired with another really good shooter but we still ended up dropping 2 birds which put us out even after I picked up 2 of his birds and he picked up 2 of mine but we each still lost one. Last up was a 27 yard killer and I was still standing when we were down to 3 shooters, the guy before me shot and missed and I missed the pick-up and the 3rd guy dusted it and won the game.

I figure I didn't do too shabby for not being a regular game shooter and rarely shooting trap. My old M12 was still able to dust some real long targets as they were descending into the berm from the 27 yards line so I feel good and had a great time. Might have to try doing it again on a work night, but am usually in bed by 8pm, 4am comes around pretty early to get ready for work.

Maybe the weekend will also work out for you.........
It would but the only time my club shoots games is on Tuesday evenings. This coming weekend I am planning on shooting a small gauge sporting clay shoot. Sub-gauges get handicap targets, I am planning on shooting 28 gauge in the 100 bird event. It is running the same time as the Indiana State Skeet championships so our club will be very busy this weekend.

Never heard of most of those games; the last one you describe, the 27 yard killer, sounds like an Annie Oakley to me. The 'green weenie' one is just like a beer bird in a league shoot, just at 23 yards. Sounds like it was fun, and good handicap practice. (Annie Oakleys are the only yardage I get to shoot, our league is all at 16 yards, non ATA.)

The bushwacker is if the first person hits the target the second person tries to break a piece of that target, if he does it 'dings' the first shooter and after 3 dings he is out. If the first person misses the target and the second person also misses the target they both get dings.

The killer is basically you shoot at the target until it breaks or hits the ground, had one the fifth shooter picked off the target about 5 feet above the ground as it was coming down. I got one as the fourth shooter, knocked out the other 3 before me. On the first four passes everyone who gets 'dinged' donates to the pot after that they are out of the game until the last shooter stands or they split the pot. At least that is how our club calls them. I'm sure there are a lot of various games shot at different clubs.

The protection each two man team gets 20 targets, 10 each and they alternate shooting as they move to each station. They need to pick up their partners bird if they miss it. Top team wins or is in a shoot-off if tied, usually shoot-offs are back at about 40 yards which puts targets out past 75-80 yards or more.

We call 'bushwhacker' "chips", but it's a variation of Annie Oakley, and the subsequent shooters (3rd, 4th, etc.) can shoot if the others miss.
In our Annie Oakleys, everyone puts $2 in at the beginning; half goes to the club. At the club I worked at as a kid, it was $5, winner kept the whole pot. The one time I won, (and I suspect my best friend, whom I was shooting off against and who often won them, let me win) it was @$150. (The Oakleys there took over an hour.)
Never heard of the protection game, though a gal shooting Annie Oakleys last week 'forgot' to shoot when she was 2nd, and her boyfriend was 1st......we gave her a heaping ration of teasing.....
