Here is a copy of the e-mail I just fired off to NBC Nightly News. If you missed it, they had on a former BATFE agent just so he could villainize JHP ammo.

Dear NBC Nightly News Staff,

I am writing in response to a portion of the broadcast from tonight, April 19, 2007, regarding the Jacketed Hollow Point ammunition apparently used by the Virginia Tech killer. Everything that the former BATFE agent said about such ammunition on the broadcast was completely wrong.

In any self-defense shooting incident, it is imperative to end the threat as quickly as possible. This is true whether one is a police officer or a citizen. The best way to guarantee a rapid incapacitation of an attacker is by interruption of the central nervous system or by massive blood loss (causing unconsciousness). Jacketed Hollow Point rounds are designed to expand upon impact, increasing the likelihood that a vital system is disrupted. These rounds are also less likely to pass through the body of a target, decreasing the risk of injury to bystanders. This is why every law enforcement agency in the United States issues JHP ammunition to their officers, and why the vast majority of armed citizens choose to use it.

If the legal requirements for the justifiable use of deadly force are met, then a shooting will be judged to be necessary, regardless of whether or not an attacker dies as a result. For the former BATFE agent to imply that there is not a need for "more deadly" ammunition indicates a woeful misunderstanding of the dynamics of firearms and US law.
