Please recommend a pocket holster for a 3" hammerless J-frame

Given all the holster-makers on this board, I can see a feeding frenzy erupting in this thread! :D

Seriously, though, I don't know that a pocket holster is generally made for a 3" J-frame. The 2-inch has them coming out of every nook and cranny, but I've never seen one for the longer barrel. Perhaps one of our holster gurus can custom-make one for you?

I just bought a Desantis for like $15 for my 642. I don't think it fit my gun too well, but it might work better for the 3" barrel. There was about another inch of room at the end of my 2" barrel and it seemed to me that the trigger guard should have fit in deeper. I cut some of the inside stitching and made the gun fit deeper into the holster. It's a bit better now and works well with the big pockets of Docker type pants.

I still don't think it works for jeans though. It makes the gun ride higher and the butt sticks up near of the top of the pocket. I'm going to carry holsterless with them.

I do like the material on the outside though. It sort of rubberized and is really "grippy". Once you get it sitting in your pocket just right, it doesn't move around. Drawing the gun from the holster is easy and the holster stays right where it should.

DMK is correct in pointing out that deep pockets are important when you carry anything longer then a 2" barrel. Unfortunately many pants manufacturers have shortened the side pockets to save a penny or so. Interestingly most late 19th century and early-middle 20th century "pocket pistols" had 3 to 3 1/2 inch barrels and pocket holsters were made to match.

Any number of makers can make a holster, but they won't work well in short pockets.

Also, if the particular revolver has a conventional hammer be sure the holster shrouds it - and a better idea might be to have the spur removed and the action changed to DAO.

(Edited to add) Now I see that it is a hammerless revolver, which is unusual, but a very good idea (wish I had one). Anyway disregard the comment about cutting off the hammer spur.

AHHH something I can weigh in on.... :D

on the subject of "short pockets"...the solution is simple...go to the local seamstress and have them cut and remade out of tougher material...I had to pair of shorts done this way last week and it only cost me $10.00...

One of my personal favorite pocket holsters for the revolvers is from Lou Alessi...Craftmanship and quality are second to none...

Another kewl looking one is from The High road's on prcccw..

hope this helps....

Oleg,

I have found that a trip to the seamstress is as effective as visiting your leather guy. Modifying clothing to accomodate firearms is fairly cheap, and can make a world of difference in your ability to carry. I have had several pairs of slacks and jeans modified to make it easier to conceal a handgun.
That having been said, I use Andrews's Leather for pocket carry.

I carry my 3†Sp101 hammerless in a Smartcarry holster. It’s like adding 2 more pockets to your wardrobe (gun pocket + a speedloader pocket) and you can carry your other stuff in the pockets that came with the pants.

I use, and recommend, a Mika pocket holster for my 2" snub. Cost is about $15.95. (Robert Mika is a retired police officer.) His web site is www.frontiernet.net/~akim

I guess this is a good time to tell you of my dealings with his business, located in Wisconsin. He sent me a holster--I did not pay him anything. He told me to try it out. If I didn't like it then give it to someone who did. And, I owe him nothing. I sent him money like 2 days after I received holster.

I finally had a chance to contact the holster makers with inquiries. The SW640 proved controllable and quite accurate. At this time, I'd like a reconnendation on the best way to carry a 5-round speedloader in an unobtrusive manner.

Once I get a holster for it, I'll post a review for anyone with the same needs to read.

Oleg,
I would also recommend the Andrews Speedloader case....I gotta admit, that is a neat idea, and looks great to boot!...

The CHIMERA is coming:D

I went through your same dilemma about 2 months ago trying to find a pocket holster for my J-Frame. I tried the Kramer, a cheapie Mikes holster and a DeSanti Nemesis. I found the the Nemesis was much more comfortable and concealable than the Kramer which felt like I had a brick in my pocket and the Mike's holster which didn't stay in my pocket as well. The Nemesis has never pulled it's self from my pocket on the 100+ practice draws I have tried. It is very comfortable and blends to your leg and pocket. I highly recommend you give it a try. Heck, for $22 bucks shipping included, what do you have too loose? If for some reason you don't like it I am sure that your could sell and recoup your cost.

Just my $.02 cents.

Mac

Got a pocket holster from Mika. he is a great guy, but the holster was useless. When I sat down in my car, the gun fell right out. He sent me another...but it was an IWB, for some reason...works as designed but not really useful, either. Fortunately, the pocket holster fit a friend's SP101 well.

So I am back to looking for a good pocket holster for a 3" 640...

ABSOLUTELY.

Without a doubt. The other guy (Duane) was an owner/ employee.

I am a VERY satified customer. I've dealt with Kevin Manley. You CAN NOT go wrong.

I posted a review in Retail Transactions a week or so ago...

I've dealt with Kevin Manley (owner, craftsman, generally nice guy). I ordered a Pocket holster for my PPK/S. I know, his site doesn't show them. I called, he said "No problem". He bought a dummy and custom made me one. 2 weeks.

He called and said that he didn't like the dye job, apologized profusely, and took 10% off the order (Proactive customer service? Pride in his work? Whoa!). He said that if this was not good enough, let him know and he'd do better. I have NO IDEA what he is talking about! It looks perfect to me. He is currently making me a pocket holster, and hip holster for my 642. I sent him one of my HKS speed loaders, he is custom making a holder for that for me too! He also takes 10% off repeat customers! When you call, he actually answers the phone! If you get voice mail, he returns calls! Email him if you want. The longest that I have waited for a response was 3 hours! The stuff is top notch in my opinion!

No, I am not related, nor do I work for him, nor do I get a kick back. I am just a VERY satified customer.

End Quote.

Any questions, PM me.
