Tried posting this over at AKFiles. Less than no help. Kind of hoping the crew here can help me figure out what I've gotten into.

Buds had stripped POF Ar-10 lowers on their "180 days to pay" layaway plan. I like ambi bolt-drop lowers, figured "what the hell", & put down $40 on one (the last one in stock as it turns out).

After doing a bit of research, it appears these are not absolutely compatible with DPMS/SR25 style uppers because they use different pins (AR-15 style pins?)

So, anybody have experience with these?

Some key points:
  • AR-10 is a specific firearm, made by Armalite, and should not be confused with other similar looking AR patterned .308 rifles.
  • There is really no such thing as a standard .308 AR rifle
  • There are barrel [technically barrel extension] standards [DMPS, AR-10]
  • There are several .308 AR magazine "standards" [AR-10A, AR-10B, SR25(DPMS), FAL, M14]
  • There are .308 receiver "styles" but not standards. [DPMS high profile, low profile]
  • DPMS style receivers tend to use 80% AR-15 parts
  • .308 AR pivot and takedown pins, magazine catch, and bolt release are almost always not compatible with AR15 counterparts, and sometimes not compatible across manufacture
What should you do about it?:
  • Purchase your receivers [both], BCG, charging handle and lower parts kit from the same manufacture
  • Purchase the appropriate barrel [extension] type based on receiver manufacture's description of barrel [extension] standard to adhere to
  • Purchase the appropriate magazine based on receiver manufacture's description of standard to adhere to
  • If purchasing an upgraded FCG, do so based upon receiver manufacture's description standard to adhere to
Alternative 1:
  • Research every individual part and it's individual compatibility
  • Accept the fact it may not be 100% compatible in all cases
  • Prepare to be disappointed in the negligible performance increase from selecting individual parts over someone who did the 4 steps in "What should I do about it"
Alternative 2:
  • Buy an assembled firearm
