VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Virginia Beach police say a gunman shot and killed three people and wounded three others at an apartment complex.

Police wouldn't say whether the gunman was among the dead or injured. Spokesman Adam Bernstein says police don't know the relationship between the shooter and the victims.

Police were notified around 5 p.m. Wednesday that shots were fired at the Thalia Gardens apartments. One witness says he heard between 10 to 15 shots.

Armed SWAT team members zeroed in on a two-story brick building. They used a loudspeaker around 7 p.m. to order the gunman to come out.

Bernstein says the SWAT team left around 11 p.m. He didn't know if officers ever made contact with the shooter.

Several streets were closed off and nearby residents were told to stay indoors

Great, something else for the antis to use against the law-abiding.

Rob,they can throw everything they want against us.It's not going to matter.
We have the inalienable God given right to defend ourselves and nothing those losers do or say is ever going to change that for the vast majority of the American people.

Oh, I know that. It just annoys me having to actually defend that against pacifists who think that they're invulnerable.

wow thats strange that I did not see that on the news tonight, the local news always hones right in on this sort of thing.

This story might very well provide public support for the armed citizen.
If I read this correctly, it took over two hours for the swat team to begin to confront the suspect, and that was from long range via a loudspeaker.

73 years ago, the United States began a program called Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), commonly known as welfare. Without going into all the social and political triggers that set this admirable yet badly managed idea into frutation, all I can say is this was IMO one of the main causes of the destructive forces of the USA as a free republic and has turned our streets and homes into what it has become. I blame no one, just saying that this will go on for as long as people continue to bring unwanted, unsupervised, under-educated and lazy people into this world. If I blame anyone, it is the ultra-conservative right religious groups that protested, and continues to protest family planning education in our schools and elsewhere. If one doesn't keep the bitch from the stud the end result is having to put up with unwanted puppies, at least let's get some condoms for these studs and stop paying blackmail (welfare) to illicit child breeders. Attacking my words is attacking reality.

(Before I get labeled a racist, I freely admit to hating stupid, selfish, narcissistic people, other than that, color, creed, race, sex, disabilities and religion have no part of my life).

And we bring in the ridicululous No Child Left Behind so we can water down standards. You can't legislate I Q.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A man about to be evicted from his apartment opened fire on maintenance workers who came for an inspection Wednesday afternoon, killing two of them and wounding three others before taking his own life, police said.

The gunman, whom police identified as William T. Smith, 52, emerged from his apartment just before 5 p.m. with an AK-47 assault rifle and a 9mm pistol and began shooting at the shocked group of maintenance workers, said Virginia Beach police officer Margie Long.

She said police knew little about Smith except that he was unemployed, had lived at the apartments for some time, and apparently has no family in the area.

Smith fatally shot 31-yerar-old Rebecca Diane Hughes in the parking lot outside the apartment and killed 63-year-old maintenance technician Swam Shestul near the entrance to the ground-floor apartment, Long said. A local TV station reported Smith dragged Shestul into the building before killing him.

Three other maintenance workers were shot, and one remains in "unstable" condition after being rushed by rescue helicopter to the trauma center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, she said. The others two are in stable condition at other hospitals, Long said.

Witnesses saw Smith retreat into his apartment after the shootings, Smith said. The first police and rescue workers on the scene helped the wounded to safety; police cordoned off several blocks around the apartment; and a SWAT team surrounded it.

Attempts to contact Smith inside failed, Long said, and police moved cautiously because of his heavy firepower. Just after 10 p.m. the SWAT team entered the building and found the bodies of Shestul and Smith. Smith apparently shot himself, Long said.

No tenants of the apartment complex were injured, Long said. Police withheld most of the particulars of the incident until noon today.
