Saw in a gunstore case Friday a gun I'd never heard of.

I know and appreciate the early Police Positive Specials, Detective Specials, Cobras, and Agents with exposed ejector rods.

I also know of the later issued Police Positives, Vipers, and the others that have shrouded ejector rods but the rest of the barrel is normal size. Like the Model 19's, rather than the fully underlugged barrels of the Pythons or Diamondbacks.

Friday I see a later issued Police Positive with 4" barrel, , except it's got the full length underlug of the Diamondback and it's markings read Police Positive Mk. V !!!

I picked it up, and it had a heavier barrel than the later issued PP, and it's crown was countersunk and flat next to the bore. It was muzzle heavy like the now extinct Viper ( alloy frame and heavy barrel up front ) except this was with a steel frame. It really felt unbalanced and awkward.

I didn't have the money to buy it ( actually I did have a couple hundred with me ) so I put a payment to lay it away on my credit card.

So can anybody tell me more about this? I've never even heard of a D frame Colt called a PP Mk. V!

I owned one for a few years, it was an excellent revolver that fit my hand perfectly. Foolishly I traded it for a Dan Wesson 9mm 1911 that had consistant reliability issues. I miss my MK V.:banghead:

That's ok, I traded a Dan Wesson revolver that fit me perfectly for a computer, now how dumb was that? But, it was many years ago when desktop computers were just getting into houses and I just had to have one. Young, dumb, and impulsive. Now, if I trade a gun it is one that I just cannot make reliable, is totally inaccurate or one which I just cannot love.

Colt was just starting to invest in the small frame revolver market again with a new lockwork when the plug was pulled on all regular production guns. The PP MkV was one of those to first suffer the impending doom.
If you like it you best grab it as not many are out there.

I did grab it.

Just can't play with it til I pay it off. The action seemed like my other D frames. But when I get it home I bet there turns out to be one hellacious difference between my Police Positive Special with $" pencil barrel and exposed ejector and the handling characteristics of the PP Mk. V. with it's 4" bulbous barrel. I call it bulbous cause it's more of a fat steer than a real bull.
