I got one for a $309 bid from one of my favorite Gunbroker vendors. The stainless steel slide is scratched up some, but the internals look like it hasn't been shot much. I got it over a month ago and finally had a chance to shoot it last Saturday (hang my head in shame). I'd never shot a full-sized Sig service pistol before, but I'd heard they were very nice.

I wasn't shooting particularly well that day. The Sig was my fourth pistol to shoot and I hadn't done worth squat up until then. I was shooting at seven yards to test some small 380's, and finally loaded up the Sig.

The first 10 rounds were easily covered by the palm of my hand. So were the next ten rounds. My FiL wondered why I had suddenly learned how to shoot, so I let him shoot ten rounds. He made a beautiful tight group and immediately asked me where I'd gotten it from and how much I'd paid.

I finished up two boxes of ammo with it and the middle was missing from the paper target. There there five fliers out of the final ten, after I'd gotten tired, and all of the other rounds were in a very nice group. The trigger is super smooth, the sights are a good size, and it fits my XXL hands very well. I really like this pistol!

For the second time ever (the first was my $200 Star Super B), my FiL decided that he just had to immediately buy the same pistol that I'd just bought. The next auction was ending on Monday morning and he fully intended to win it. Unfortunately for him, his A/C died on Sunday night. He needed a new inside unit AND a new outside unit. So much for the Sig. As I told him, the good news is that he can shoot mine whenever he wants.

There are a bunch of these police turn-in Sig 229 40 caliber pistols for sale these days, and they are pretty cheap. I purposely avoided the DAK trigger models, since I read that lots of folks don't care for them. I would highly recommend the regular model. Mine is an extremely well-fitted, high-quality pistol. It's a great shooter. To get one for the price I paid is pretty much a steal. My advice is get one while you can.

I loved shooting the P226 in 40 cal. Not a police turn in. My brother in law has one and I shot it the last time I visited him. Excellent shooter. Glad you got a good deal.

I got the DAK version several years ago. I think it's like shooting a nice DA revolver.

Sounds like you've got a good one there! Some years back I went looking for a new gun for home defense. Didn't want a Glock, S&W M&P, or a SA XD; none of them were a good fit for my smaller size hand. Visited the LGS and my buddy who worked there had two SIG P229s in the used gun case. One was 9mm, the other .40S&W. Both were like new in the box and came with 3 magazines. Really wanted to stay with a 9mm and this one had a rail, the E2 grips, factory night sights, and the Short Reset Trigger; all for way less than half of what a new one would go for. Should have gone back for the .40 but at the time all I really wanted was the 9mm.

Really love the overall quality of this gun along with the way it feels so comfortable in my hand. Great gun at a great price!

Yes. The lightness of the DAO trigger surprised me, and it seems pretty light, partly due to the pronounced smoothness and lack of 'stacking'.
It's strange that .40 caliber handguns are now "the Unwashed", a wolf in holy places, so to speak. I'm aware of the reasons but it is as if suddenly they all have a disease, i.e. a social disease.

There are more than a few of these used 229s on Armslist at really good prices, sometimes in DA/SA.
Even a good full-sized German-proofed Sig P220 (.45) sold weeks ago on Gunbroker for only $380 or so. Check "Advanced", then use Completed Bids, verify that you're in the "firearms" category. Guns that sold clearly state "Sold" in a large green band.

Nice score. I bought a leo 226 with night sights & the one piece grip. Mine had just a hint of holster wear on the trigger guard. I gave it to my son after I shot it just to be sure everything was good. I just can't get over that d/a to s/a trigger. I paid $279. plus tax & it came with 3 mags. & the box.

Thanks for all of the kind comments. I'm pretty wiped out from my work week and will probably rest this weekend. Next weekend I hope to take the Sig out again. It's not too often that I find a semiauto that I shoot as well as my revolvers.

And I have to say yet again, my heartfelt thanks go out to all of the PD's that are dumping their 40 caliber pistols to go back to 9mm's. I have gotten the Sig, a Glock, and two Berettas for very low prices due to this caliber change. I can only hope that they will realize their error and switch from 9mm to something else in a few years so that I can snag a bunch of 9mm pistols for rock bottom prices similar to what I paid for the 40's. (Both of the Berettas were under $200. That's just ridiculous.)

Aim Surplus, whom I've had very satisfactory dealings with, has them too.

I actually prefer my P228 and my M11-A1. But if I’m going to shoot .40S&W my own P226 fits the bill nicely for me.

My .40 caliber P229's recoil and muzzle rise are similar to those of my 9mm P228. I never noticed any difference, and my hands are slender.

This is mentioned for those who don't imagine that they would enjoy shooting the .40 round in a P229.
