The .264 and 7mm WinMags jumped up bigtime in popularity for a couple of reasons. One was the change in "Who is a hunter?"
More guys who had some money in their billfolds and who were primarily city folks had trouble figuring out how far away was an elk. This tied into the relatively early years of guided elk hunts in the Rockies, plus the fairly large numbers of mulies at that time. Nothing new about guided hunts, there, of course, but that whole period was a time of growth. Remember, we're talking 40 years ago, mas o menos.
So, with the gunzine writers hollering, "Flat shooting!", guys bought these critters and started trying to kill stuff at 400 to 600 yards. Similar problem with the .25-06, for that matter...
