Two regular carry pieces: S&W M659 with 15 round magazine and S&W M40. Don't carry more ammo for the auto. Carry 10 rounds in Speed Strips for the m40. Got 15 either way. If that doesn't solve the problem more ammo likely won't help.

I voted before reading the OP but it doesn't matter, same answer anyway. I always carry spares and they're always my handloads.

Always.

If I have a type 2 or 3 malfuction, I'm stripping the mag during the clearance drill and not worrying about retaining it. Spare mag(s) get me back in the fight if necessary.

Also, have never been in a situation that when it was over thought "Damn I brought to much ammo".

YMMV

Sometimes the crowd comes to you though. Look at what happened at North Holllywood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Hollywood_shootout), Wilmington (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl3MgW8y0jo), and Miami (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_FBI_Miami_shootout), a whole lot of shots in really nice neighborhoods. All of these well-trained LEOs had huge accuracy and ammunition management difficulties in their real gunfights, we all will too.

As far as the side discussion, I NEVER carry my handloaded ammunition for protection, if it fails, my survivors wouldn't be able to sue anyone about it.

We're talking about CCW, right? Or are we talking about patrolling in a hostile environment with kevlar vests and an AR15? I'm pretty shocked at the number of people carrying reloads all the time.

If you're going to draw a CCW it's to stop an imminent threat. Not to lay down suppressive fire while you call in air support. :)

I wonder how many of the people who answered "always" even carry a CCW always. And no, a gun and an extra mag in your car or in the nightstand doesn't count.

I had to think about for a minuet, and marked sometimes. I seldom carry a reload on my person, yet I always have a 2 speed strips of Federal 38 special +P+ in the center counsel of my car.

"tomrkba, Always carry a reload. I refuse to die because I ran out of ammo."

How often are you in an environment that target rich? Military on Patrol and LEO's in raid situations maybe.

When I carry, I do carry a reload, but really more for malfunction clearance purposes.

I carry a spare magazine, I'm not saying don't, I'm questioning tomrkba's logic used for places to hang out if you think you will need that much ammo to be safe.

I responded "Usually" simply because there have been times that I have been in a hurry and forgot the spare ammo but not the gun. I would say my average is 98% of the time.

So, I'm wondering how many of the people who "always" carry reloads are so concerned about "dying for lack of ammunition" and/or magazine failure that they stop to strap on a double mag carrier when they hear a bump in the night to augment that gun they keep on the nightstand. :)

I voted "always", but truthfully, thats because of close calls in Afghanistan; not a realistic SD need in the States. I just remember the bad feeling of being down to my last few rounds, and it impacts my carry choices here. Do I NEED 2 spares? If I really thought I did, I wouldn't go there; its just a "peace of mind" thing...

I also voted before reading. My bad. I voted "never" because I don't reload my own ammo.

As for a reload of ammo, yes sometimes I do. I either carry an extra mag, or a whole extra gun. it's nice to know that if something should happen to the belt gun, there's an LCP in the pocket.

Dang, I answered wrong. I though the poll was if we ever carried reloaded ammunition, which I always do. I never carry spare ammo, except at work.

So did I. That's what I get for skimming.

But yes, I carry a reload. With a revolver, a couple of speed strips. With a semi, a spare magazine. Why not? It's cheap, and doesn't take up much room, and eats nothing.

And yes, I carry reloaded ammo at times.

I do not carry spare magazines with me at all. Why? Because someone once said that if it isn;t over in 3-4 shots, Then you shouldn't be in that place to begin with.

Well shoot. If I have to draw a gun, much less shoot it, I probably shouldn't be there in the first place. Or at least I'll wish I wasn't.

If it's magazine fed, I always carry a spare mainly for the reason rcmodel pointed out, magazines can and do fail. Certainly the odds are against it, but why not have that little bit of extra insurance?

With revolvers I usually carry a few extra rounds but not always, depends on the situation. When I'm out tramping around the hills I generally have a handful of extra rounds on me. When I'm just hanging out around a campfire or BBQ grill, I may not have any extras on me.

I used to be off and on with the spare speed strip but since I had a pouch made for my belt I've been carrying one all the time.

If you carry a gun at all you should carry at least one reload for it. It adds little weight, and if the situation has deteriorated to where you need to shoot at all, it isn't much of a stretch to assume you might run out of ammunition.
