Mossberg 500, 12ga, 28" ported barrel, $200 at Walmart. Very tempting, except I'm nervous about that porting. Anyone have first-hand experience with a ported Mossberg? I'm mainly concerned about it being louder.

shot one last year with 1 1/8 oz target loads. it was a 28" ported with modified choke tube. I didn't notice any significant reduction in muzzle climb, and the noise was noticeably louder, though not extreme. I shot the same loads in a Rem 870 28" modified choke barrel for comparison. It might only be the difference in the guns, but I prefer the 870. Like the Mossy-- like the 870 more. Don't really care for the ports.

Compared the same barrels and loads over a chronograph, and the non-ported 28" 870 barrel consistently shot 50 fps faster. I didn't notice a significant difference in recoil, either.

HTH...

In a side by side test, a Mossy 835 with porting was much louder than Frankenstein with its bunty little 21" barrel.

I'm no fan of porting, but the price is nice. It's up to you...

I got my ported 500 at Wal-Mart. $200 well spent..
If a little extra noise doesn't bother you, the slight reduction in muzzle climb is worth it.

Heck, all 12ga. shotguns are loud! If loud noises bother you, guns are not your deal. If the thing was 18" and ported maybe it would be a problem but, a 28" ported bbl, naaa. ;)

I bought a ported 500 combo this year. I used to shoot an unported old as dirt 500. I really didnt' notice a diffrence shooting the gun at the range with ear protection. I shot twice while hunting without ear protection using 3" sabbat slugs with my rifled barrel and didn't hear a thing. So as far as target, fun shoot's I wouldn't be concerned. And as far as hunting well an unproted 12ga can theorectly destroy your hearing so I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh and I also sighted in my ported 12 gauge this year beside 2 12gauge unported 870's and my old Mossie unported 12 and the diffrence was neglible with ear plugs. Everyone was shooting 3" slugs except for the old mossie 500 shooting 2 3/4 .

I bought the 500 Trophy with the rifled and ported barrel.

I can't say I've noticed a noise difference but I can say I have noticed a recoil difference when using the Remington Copper Solids.

They are a really good gun, I don't thinlk you'de be making a mistake buying one.
