If, say for example, an acquaintance offered to sell you a 5" barrel late '50s pre-27 in good shape (I'd say 80% -- slightest hint of wear at muzzle, distinct turn line, but totally clean finish with no scratches, nicks or freckling -- not the tightest lock-up, but not the loosest, either and timing is good with no end-shake, grips not original, but excellent) ... for $1100 ... should this be jumped on?

I haven't seen a 5" for a long time, and while this is not the pristine version I covet, I somehow want it ... Fjestad says $1085, but as I said, the five-inchers seem scarce ...

realize my post has been up only a couple hours or so, but I am seeking any opinions (the opportunity appears time-sensitive) ...

No S&W pre-27 aficianados out there? Bueller?

Given the cosmetic wear and lack of original stocks I'd say the seller's price is high. On the plus side the 5" barrel length is scarce, but not rare. The pre-1957 birth date is also in it's favor. It's not likely to attract many serious collectors, but users/shooters might get in a dog fight over it.

It depends on badly you want the 5 inch barrel length, and what you want to do with it. At the stated price don't consider it as an investment.

IMO the price of $850 is the top end but price is subjective. If you think it's a good price and you think the revolver is worth $1100, then it is.

Ah, you guys are awesome, many thanks. That's why I said "sanity check." My gut instinct was to offer 850, and that's where I'll stand; if he goes for it, it's just gonna be a shooter ... I really want a five-inch early 27 or pre-27, but I can wait for The One (we all know it when we see it).

Thanks!

Wise.

I would not pay $850 for it myself in that condition, and without original grips to boot..

But thats just me.

If I was salivating all over it like I do some guns sometimes, I might.

But I ain't.

There aree better ones out there at that price if you look hard and long enough.

3-1/2 inch S&W model 27's are as hard [or harder]
too find in pristine condition. I found a '77 model
several years back, in original box with all paperwork;
no cylinder drag line, with unused tools, and virtually
in UNFIRED condition for six C-notes. I think I did
pretty well on this one; as I have been offered $1,000
for this one, but it ain't going anywhere~! ;) ;) :D

Ummm, I said $850 at the very top, not a starting offer. I would only pay the full $850 if the owner wouldn't go lower and I really really wanted it. (like you seem to want it)

I would pay $850 if that was the only way to score the revolver but don't start @$850. (IMO of course)

I'm betting if you look around you can find a M27 in the condition you describe for ~$650...

*EDIT*
Just as an example, this was for sale on this forum and sold for $750 and that revolver looks like it's in much better condition than the one you described. Look Here.
