PPK/S with a unique serial number: what would you pay?

A friend of mine recently took in trade a Walther PPK/S at his shop.

It's used, but still in very nice condition. US-made. (BTW, I still haven't had a chance to see it, so I'm just reporting the description my friend gave me).

Here's the deal: the serial number is "007-bad". It's not a special-order from the factory or promotional pistol or anything like that. That's the way it came off the line.

My friend doesnt' really know what to ask for the pistol. I'm assuming that some die-hard PPK fans would like to add this one to their collections.

So, would any of you PPK fans out there think this pistol has some additional attraction simply because of the serial number?

What would I pay? Nothing. I collect guns, not serial numbers. On the other hand a James Bond fan or a specialized Walther collector might well play plenty. What you need to look at here is, "where is the likely market for this specialized gun, and how do I reach it?"

The first thing too do is see if Walther can confirm, in writing, that the number is genuine. No serious collector will put up big bucks unless they are sure the piece isn't a fake.

Once you have proof in hand I would auction the piece on one of the larger and more popular gun auction sites. And I would push the James Bond association for all it was worth. After all (presuming it is genuine) no other Walther of that kind has that exact number.

Salesmanship is always the key ...

All serial numbers are unique, it's the law.
If you get one like this that spells something, well, it's worth whatever you can get for it.

I tried hard to get the Voit-Perigrine rep to sell me their pre-production Bren Ten reissue no 007 but he wouldn't let me have it. And the venture folded anyhow.

Uhmmmm - - Limited interest

In my view, this interesting serial number would be more enticing if it was on a blue PPK (no /S) in 7.65 mm.

i also think the appeal would be limited to the simple novelty of the number as any true "Bond fan" would shun the PPK/s as a corruption of both the PPK and the PP

Not necessarily. Many of James's fans aren't gunny enough to understand the fine points.

Again, its all in the way you sell it. Think salesmanship ...
