Based on what feedback I get, in 2008 there will Precision Rifle (sniper-ish) and Hunter type matches in Pueblo West. Using the below target and match description there will always be 40 dogs to shoot April thru Oct.

The Great Prairie Dog Steel Shoot

10 Steel Prairie Dog Targets ranging from 175-400 yards shot under time constraints.

Each competitor will shoot the match four times requiring no more than 40 rounds.

One shot per target. No make up shots.

No penalties for misses. Only points earned for hits.

15 total seconds allowed per shot.

Targets hit within the first 10 seconds are worth 10 points. Hits between 10.01 seconds and 15.00 seconds are worth 5 points. If the competitor does not take a shot before 15.01 seconds or shoots after 15.01 seconds, it is a 10 point penalty, hit or miss.

In the event of a tie, the shoot-off will be a 4 inch plate at 425 yards. First shooter to miss is the loser.

Shooters start prone behind rifle with bolt/action open and ammunition in hand.

Upon start signal, shooter may load rifle and engage target.

3 divisions. Heavy rifle, 12+ pounds. Light rifle, under 12 pounds. Semi-Auto rifle.

Scopes, bi-pods, sandbags, rests, muzzle brakes, laser rangefinders allowed.

40 gn minimum bullet weight.

Steel Core, Armor-Piercing and Tracer ammo *NOT* allowed. $50 fine per target that is damaged with above ammo.

Match re-entries are allowed. However only the first time counts for match score.

Sounds great! I'll have to get in on that action. Won't have much of a "varmint" gun to compete with, but could certainly bring out what I have.

Good idea. Where will this be held?

Hoser, where can I find out about membership/fees out at Pueblo West? I'm up in Denver, so it would probably be a bit of a drive to join, but are these shoots open to the public?

Nick

You dont have to be a member of the range to shoot these matches. I pay the guest/trespass fee out of the match fees.

Membership there is a one time $100 fee then $54 a year. 365 days, 8:00 till dusk.

No limit on caliber or equipment, other than the stated weight limits and AP?

Nope. I didnt want to make the rules and equipment list hard/complicated. Just get out there and shoot. Run what you brung. No excuses for not coming out.

The only reason semi-autos have their own class is that they are harder to shoot well. This isnt a speed contest. You have 15 seconds for one shot. No advantage in shooting a semi.

The bullet weight limit is there to protect my steel. Velocity is what kills steel. I wanted to 20 calibers to be allowed to play so I am just making sure they are using the heavy bullets. I am testing different calibers and bullet weights to see how much steel I might loose each match. A Swift or a 22-250AI shooting 40s might tear some things up.

Days when the wind forecast is light, the targets will get pushed out. Gusty forecast, they might come in a little.

We don't have many prairie dogs here in Indiana. It'd be fun to set up a course like that here. Wondering what the cost per target it? Other obvious problem would be finding a safe place to shoot.

hmmm...

...that sounds like fun! I'd love to join PWSA if they're taking new members...
I'll play...semi-auto for me...if 5.56 is ok?
I can use heavier bullets with lead cores... rauch06.gif

Hey Glenn. Tried to get you in a few years back but you never came back and went MIA.

5.56/223 is ok as long as the bullets weigh 40+ grains and arent AP or APIT. Heck, Jimmy wants to shoot his 338LM. OK by me.

New target faces should run about $25-40 each. The target itself with one face cost me $150 to make early this year. I made up 12. I dont know how much steel has gone up since. My buddy has a CNC plasma cutter and cuts all our steel for minimal labor.

Any range will work. The bullets completely disintegrate when they hit steel. An edge hit might send the round somewhere, but our impact area is a military impact area. No worry of people there.

ha...

...Indeed...wound up in Louisiana for a year and then trucking for two...Back in the 'Springs now and gettin' started again...
...You still wearin' those Hawayeen shirts?

I'm in...can't wait...I was down for the LAV class last month and had a ball with Jeff and the guys...In fact, I just got in from the Ashcrafts a 'bit ago, Justin and I attacked the stealth dove problem and partially eradicated them...

Sounds like something I need to do, my first gun would be an AR15 with 69 gr. handloads and if allowed, second gun would be a 220 Swift. (old school, works on real dogs)
I've heard from Mike @ MGM that M193 ammo is hard on steel targets, any idea if that is velocity related, or bullet construction?
If a 55 gr. FMJ @ 3300 fps is a problem, would a 53 gr. HP @ 3900 fps be as well?

Anyway it sounds like a great idea and a good time.

I'm a little confused by the cartridge requirement. Would a mundane .308 shooting 175 or 168 grain Matchkings be appropriate?

Velocity is the main killer of steel. I am testing several different bullets like 20 caliber bullets and some of the faster 22 caliber cartridges like the Swift, 22-250 Ackley and 22 BR. I might end up with a max velocity depending on target damage. I dont mind a little damage, but buying new targets every month aint gonna happen.

Your AR shooting 69 SMKs will be no problem at all.

I had a Win Model 70 in Swift a long time ago. Really hammered the dogs.

No cartridge requirement. Just a minimum bullet weight.

Your 308 with just about any bullet weight would be fine. Come on out.
