IMO, it's worth noting that immediately after the shooting at VT became known, many on this forum predicted President Bush would use the event as a means to curry favor with Dem lawmakers on the Iraq spending bill in exchange for support of AWBII or other new gun control legistlation.

I told them that my administration would do everything possible to assist with the investigation, and that I pledged that we would stand ready to help local law enforcement and the local community in any way we can during this time of sorrow.

I found the statements he made, and the position the administration is taking in general, to be very good. His message was as positive as could be expected in the midst of such a tragedy. He made no call for stricter gun laws, made no political promises to "right the wrong," nor said that guns have no place in institutions of learning.

Imagine the same circumstances with Kerry, Hillary, or Obama in office. Or even Rudy, for that matter.

Here's a posting from Hillary's official website, by one of her supporters:

by boris 4/16/2007 8:07:01 PM I'm shocked, i actually found out about this from this site. I saw message about Virginia Tech Tragedy and went to find an article. While freedoms of a person are very important I believe the "Bear Arms" idea no longer works in current world. It was necessary during the time when this country was just created because we did not have one police force and government did not have full control over whole territory. Now with police and ability of one person to call for help that will come fully armed the freedom of guns no longer works. It is unbelievable of such events continue to happen, as a college student myself I am horrified of such possibility ever happening where I attend.

VT provided "boris" with the clearest possible argument against putting one's defense in the hands of the government, but he is clearly too blind to see it. 30+ dead, and he proclaims that "one person can call for help which will come fully armed", and the "freedom of guns no longer works." People just don't come any stupider.

The scary part is that these nuts support even bigger nuts. Be thankful Bush was in office when this happened.
