I have an opportunity to buy a Norinco preban 56s AK with a fixed stock and was wondering if there was a way to tell if it is “pre-ban” (or if such a thing really exists). Also, what would be a good price for one in decent condition? Thanks.

stamped or milled? A true preban will still have a folding bayo and pistol grip, muzzle nut or slant brake, there were also the MAK 90s which were an attempt to get around ban no bayo lug not threaded muzzle and thumbhole stock.

Value is going to depend on alot more info than ya have posted, what are the markings etc?

A MAK 90 will run ya around $400 in like new condition on a stamped reciever a milled reciever can almost double that and a true PRE-BAN up to $1200 depending on how its equiped...

It is a stamped receiver but I haven’t gotten a chance to look at it yet (no pictures either). I was just trying to get an idea ahead of time so if it turned out to be a good deal I wouldn’t have to make two trips.

So the bayonet should be attached to the rifle (like and SKS)?

I will check out the AK Files also.

All Norinco guns are "pre-ban" if referring to the 1994 Assault weapons ban. What you want is a 1989 "pre-ban" which means pre-"sporting only". A quick way to check is look at the receiver. If it says "MAK-90" it means "modified-AK, after the year 1990" so, not authentic if it's a 56s, then it means "Type-56 s" which I'm guessing is either "semi-auto" or "sporting" or side-folder.
