If it is a US Property marked 1917, then the price is right. I would advise you to obtain a copy of SCS&W to get an idea of the proper military markings. You can also compare markings here. Fakes are out there.
If there is an S&W emblem on the sideplate, along with an S serial prefix, then it is a postwar commercial gun, and is actually worth more than the military version. $550 would be a steal on such a gun in excellent condition.
