I got an email from a friend who discovered a Colt Series 70 in the belongings of her grandmother who passed away. She's looking to see what it might be worth. I'm out of town and won't be able to inpect the pistol until the end of the month and the description is a little lacking, but I thought my THR friends could maybe ballpark it's value to me. I don't know if this is a $300 gun or a $700 or more gun. Any feedback is appreciated.

My dad recently acquired a handgun as he was cleaning out my grandmother's house, as she passed away last month. He asked me to ask you about the gun, and if you or someone you knew would potentially be interested in purchasing it. It's a Colt's MK IV/Series 70 Government model .45 (I read that off the side of the barrel). It has a few extras I think that modified it...It has Bo-mar sights, extra trigger work, and a thumb-safety that was all installed by my uncle. Apparently it has a few rust spots on it, but I think in good condition?

So my dad wanted to know what you think about this model, what something like that would be worth, etc. I appreciate your help, looking forward to hearing from you, and hope that the rest of your stay in Cincinnati is pleasant.

If it is in good shape with no weird homemade add ons (98% NRA) with box and papers, I would pay about $800 for one. Just my personal feeling, not base on anything.

:)

+1 for chongfa. You will see that that opinion is consistent with asking and selling prices posted here.

Apparently, this gun is not quite in that condition:

If I were buying it, I'd want to carefully inspect it -- even good parts can be poorly installed.

Part of the value depends on who installed the Bo-Mar sight, etc.

Might be, that is was set up as either a wad gun for Bullseye or a hardball gun for Leg Matches. If so, and if the work was done correctly, it still would be worth the $800, especially since a hardball gun from Les Baer is $1500 these days. Clark's wad gun and hardball guns run about the same.

Even if the pistol work was done by an amateur, the basic gun is still worth at least $700 (as long as it's mechanically sound and not too beat up) as a platform to do a professional upgrade for competition shooting. At least that's my opinion.
