This article is excerpted from the book, The Muzzle Loading Cap Lock Rifle by Ned H. Roberts. The entire book can be accessed here:

Early in the 1880's in their efforts to improve the long range accuracy of their rifles Horace Warner, Wm. V. Lowe, and N.S. Brockway decided that better ignition of the powder through the medium of a stronger flame would improve the accuracy. Accordingly these makers devised a method of replacing the ordinary nipple with a steel fitting and cap, or top, with a firing pin inside, which used a shot-gun primer or large sized rifle cartridge primer, in place of the percussion cap and gave a stronger flame resulting in much improved ignition of the powder charge, which, in turn, considerably increased the accuracy of their rifles at all ranges. Illustrations are shown herewith of the method employed by Wm. V. Lowe and N.S. Brockway in using the primer instead of the percussion cap in their rifles.

The particulars of the device can be found on page 21 et seq of the above cited book.

IMHO, Ned Roberts would have heartily approved of modern inline muzzleloaders, as is illustrated by the following:
Has some old hide-bound custom, or practice, prevented the present-day riflemen from using the primer ignition in the muzzle-loading rifle? If so this custom should be ignored as this is a day of improvements - of progress - and no old custom should be allowed to stand in the way of worthwhile improvements even in muzzle-loading rifle shooting. If the present rules do not allow the use of the primer instead of the percussion cap, those rules should be changed so as to allow this and promote improvements instead of hindering this.

If you can find it in this forum, there is an inline rifle that was made around the time of the American Civil War. It's the only inline I would want. I asked the thread starter to do a photo essay with a short write up for Muzzle Blasts magazine.

I have one of those that takes small pistol or small rifle primers. It even came with a capper that holds about 20 primers. I have used it but sometimes the primer will stick in the cup. A BP rifle is slow enough to load already. Adding one of these just makes loading even slower. I have never had any problems with regular #11 caps. I have some CCI #11 Magnum caps but have never tried them.

I can't for the life of me remember who made the nipple thing I have. I have had it for a long time. Like over twenty years. It may have been sold by Uncle Mikes. Maybe...

You may be thinking of the "Flam-in-glo"(spelling?) or something named similarly that was out in the 1970s or 80s. It used small rifle/pistol primers to replace percussion caps.

Is anyone still making a large pistol/rifle primer adaptor? Quite frankly when firearm related items became harder to come by Rem #10’s became impossible to obtain for quite some time. Luckily I had been buying ten tins at a time and had some, but in the event of it happening again I could still shoot.

I still can't find Rem #10's in my area. I ended up ordering a bunch of CCI #11's
