Students are organizing a walkout May 2 in support of the second amendment. It seems there is a mainstream media blackout, though there may be coverage after the fact.

I'm planning to contact admin in my district and ask if they will announce a position allowing students to participate, as they did before the anti walkouts. If you have students in schools, contact your admin and ask them to announce the walkout to students. Ask them to allow and support the protests as they did before.

Even if you don't have a kid in school you can urge your school board to give equal time to this.

The lack if coverage hurts because we now don't have much time.

We should also write letters to the editor, even after the event, both to promote the cause and take issue with the coverage disparity.

More specific evidence that the media is not objective (I know, obvious) when it comes to guns and in fact advocated for the anti-gun students but gives no or unequal time to progun students...

The left lean of schools is all the more reason to insist on consistent treatment from teachers and admin. They may have animus toward guns, but they are likely more afraid of a law suit.

Also, the generalizatiins abt teachers batted around the web may often be true. But there are quite a few men teaching secondary, and quite a few gun owners in ed (men and women), especially in flyover country. If we press schools to be consistent when it comes to free speech on the issue, it may make those teachers more willing to buck the apparent majority.

A discussion of the challenges in teaching for 2A supporters would be good in Activism Discussion, but let's stay focused on how to strengthen this plan.

Be interesting to see if schools give extra attention, in a negative way, to students who participate. Closely watching them, mandatory time with school psychologist, etc.

Wouldn’t put it past them. “It’s for the children...”

There is still no coverage from the major networks, despite over 500 schools participating. Only coverage is on conservative or guns sites. I did also see a NRA post on Facebook.

The suggested walk-out time is 10am.

I emailed administrators Friday when I found out. No responses.

The two administrators I'm close enough to talk to said there wasnt the apparent student support or time to announce and order a safe walkout. Both said individual students wouldn't be punished, though one said a parent would have to check the student out. One said if there was a late groundswell of student support, she would announce a procedure tomorrow.

They are slow-walking, but they do seem to recognize that they need to at least appear consistent -- which we can use.

End-of-year testing here (the Florida Standards Assessment battery, as well as others depending on grade level and course) likely interfered with, or threatened to interfere with, any planned walkouts this week in Florida.

It fell flat here. And I saw no news reports the day of or after.

I think it goes to show how much of the anti walkout's success depended on media and organizational support.

And timing.
