Problem with Browning Hi Power,

I have a Hi Power that will not stay in the full cocked position when it cycles. I will gat a few shots, and then hAve to manually cock the hammer. I will be in the half cocked position. Needless to say, id I wanted a true single action handgun, I would have bought one.

Any ideas?

One of the really nice things about the HP is that you can fully detail strip it and get it back together. They are quite simple.

I'd take it apart. Your hammer or sear may have been messed with by a previous owner or someone trying to give it a "trigger job". Those angles are critical and they are much easier to screw up than they are to get right. People endlessly screw up HP's trying to replicate 1911 triggers.

Or you could get lucky and just find that it is full of crud. But you would probably be able to tell if someone had tried to improve it.

Beyond that, without looking at the inside of the pistol, you would probably have a hard time telling exactly what is wrong.

What ammo are you using? When was the last time it was cleaned and reassembled? Did it work properly before that?

Without more information, it's going to be hard to tell if the hammer falling to half cock or is it not being fully cocked in the first place......

problem could be in the hammer , sear or underside of the slide, also check the recoil spring and guide is not damage or installed wrong.

Could be dirty, or hook engagement of the hammer and sear.....Orrrrrrrr it could be a weak mainspring. That's right, a weak mainspring. One of the "fingers" of the mainspring puts pressure on the sear and will allow it to "jump" out of engagement if it has grown weak. Or you can buy 2 different sears and install them and still have the problem....Ask me how I know this.......

O.K. I'll ask how you know this,as a Browning hi-power has a coiled mainspring as does a 1911
