I'd love to own a Smith 642 or other S&W J frame 38 revolver.

Problems is: that I have long fingers and the Smith trigger tends to pinch my trigger finger when firing them.

Anyone else have the same problem? Any fixes, or am I destined to get a
Taurus? The Taurus guns have a wider trigger.

Yes, I definitely do/did - at least if I am correctly interpreting your phrase "trigger tends to pinch my trigger finger when firing them".

I take that to mean that part of your finger gets pinched between the rear face of the trigger and the trigger guard as you complete your pull-through when firing. The firm grip that you need in order to control J-frame recoil then goes to town on the pinched portion and tenderizes your finger.

Within 50 rounds, you're probably dreading the next shot. I know I was until I found the simple solution, which is to wrap a heavy-duty fabric bandage around the vulnerable portion of your index finger before beginning firing. Problem solved, at least for me!

I remember my first J-frame firing session after implementing this simple fix. Oh, CZF, the joy and happiness of no longer cringing as I pulled the trigger!

It worked wonders for me. It's worth a try.

Different grips will place your finger in different positions and prevent the pinch. If you have really long fingers then look for a grip that covers the rear of the grip frame.
If you can find a set of Herrett Shooting Ace grips they work very nicely. They add a bit of length to the backstrap and are shaped so you don't need a grip adapter.
Other makers like Pachmyer also have similar type grips.
I just did a quick search on Ebay and found a set. Pretty good price.

Breaking the edge that is doing the biting just might solve the problem. Just a slight radius will work. Any decent 'smith can do it. I have done it myself.

Toughen up your hands :what:

Seriously, a set of grips which cover the back strap would probably do what you need.

Stay away from the trigger shoe, they are for bulls eye guns not carry guns as they can shift under recoil and jam up the works.

+1
Try some different grips, I have a large hand and my J frame fits great.

Just get a Taurus 85 and live happy with the wider trigger and, oh, BTW, much better DA pull and all for less money. been happy with my Ultra Lite for 11 years and 7K rounds or near abouts. If you don't mind the weight, the SP101 trigger is wider and the gun is a little larger than a J while not being as bulky as a K frame.

As noted above I would break the sharp edge on the rear of the trigger. S&W offers (or did) a wider trigger (.347" target) for the J frames which could be installed and contoured.
