My 1911 9mm custom loaded has around 400 rounds through it. There are problems extracting the round from the barrel and precision could be tighter. I've tried different ammo and magazines and problems are still there.

Can I expect it to get better with break in, or should I take it to a gunsmith now?

(this was also posted in the Springfield section of the 1911forum a minute ago)

Just my opinion, but I think it ought to run right out of the box. Les Baer's have a reputation of being so tight that they need a run-in period to loosen up enough to be reliable, but they are the only 1911 with that reputation to my knowledge.

Yep!

Get thee to a 'smithy! RIGHT AWAY! After 400 rounds, a custom pistol should not miss a beat! I would be extremely irritated!

BTW,

My Razorback (DWF) still needs "breaking in!" I've only shot 1 box of CCI-Speer blazers through it! It is tighter than a gnat's arse! :scrutiny:

Extraction Woes

If a failure to extract is the only problem, check the tension and look at
the hook to see if it looks worn. A little bend and tweak may be all it needs to set things straight.

On that "Tight as a Tick Razorback...

Get some CLP Breakfree and a 4-ounce tub of J&B Bore cleaner. Put
a tablespoon of the oil in a suitable small cup and add bore cleaner to it,
stirring as you go. Keep adding bore cleaner until you form a soupy paste
that will just start to sag, but not drip off the end of a screwdriver.

Coat the frame rails, locking lugs, lower barrel lug and link, slidestop crosspin, and sides of the chamber end of the barrel. Put a light smear
on the disconnector/cocking rail in the slide, and a like amount on the
ID of the barrel bushing.

With the recoil system out of the gun, but the bushing left in place, hand-cycle the slide about 200 times. Make sure you get full travel in both directions. Clean it out with Gunk Carb Medic, and be careful that a lot
of the carb cleaner doesn't get into the frame. Rags will help. If you can detail strip the frame, so much the better. Spray as you wish. Wipe, re-oil
and reassemble the gun. Unless something is badly out of whack, it will be much better. Most feel like buttered glass after this treatment.

Be of good cheer and love for your fellow man!
