I recently purchased a stainless howell conversin cylinder for my 1858 remmie. It mounted right into the gun with no problem but when I tried to load it I had a big problem. It is supposed to be chambered for .45 colt and I checked the part number on the box and it is the right number. It appears to have been machined incorretly. The cartridge does not go in the whole way and there is nowhere for the rim of the cartridge to mount flush against the cylinder. I sent an email to buffalo arms co about it but I haven't heard a reply yet. I was just wondering if this is normal and I'm gonna have to take it to a gunsmith to get it correctly chambered or if maybe it was boxed wrong and maybe it is chambered for a different round. I'm not trying to bash howells or buffalo arms co, I'm just new to this and I'm looking for a little insight.

This is as far in as the round will go.

Wow that looks amazingly like what I see if I try to load a .45 Colt in a Blackhawk cylinder made for .45ACP.

Contacting the company sounds resonable to me.

The cylinder is not marked. The box it came in is marked by howells "1858 Remington Pietta .45 5 shot stainless steel" and the buffalo arms tag reads "R&D Cart. Con Stainless for 45 colt 1858 Pietta" I'm guessing it was just boxed wrong. Normally I would just keep it but seeing as I already bought 100rds of .45 colt cowboy ammo and .45acp ammo is impossible to find, I think I'll be sending it back

Because of the low price and availability of 45ACP ammo; the ACP cylinder usually fetches a higher price than the LC cylinder. I reload both, but more so the LC as they are much more expensive. You might want to auction it on one of the gun auction sites and add a trade for the LC cylinder as an option.

+10 what robhof said. If thats an actual Howells cylinder for .45acp I would totally hold on to it. I've been looking for one for awhile and I honestly never knew they manufactured them.

That's definitely a .45 ACP cylinder, it's got the support ring for the casing in it.
I would keep it, too, but let them know it was put in the wrong box so they can give other customers a heads up and do some retraining for their employees.

I contacted buffalo arms co and they agree that it was boxed wrong. They have also agreed to give me a full refund as well as refunding the shipping and the return shipping. They won't trade it for the .45 colt cylinder because it's out of stock. I was considering keeping it but seeing as I don't reload and I can't find any non jacketed ammo in 45acp, I'll probably just send it back. When I bought it' it was advertised as an R&D conversion but the box is from howells. Seeing as they are the same company, I don't think it makes much of a difference.

I'm only gonna be sending it back on saturday I may look into selling it as opposed to sending it back. If anyone is interested, send me a PM
