I just picked up a S&W 645 and need a couple spare magazines for it. I found some S&W and some made by Promag. Has anyone had any experience with this brand, there is a pretty big difference in price. I would rather go cheap if they are of good quality, but quality is the big thing. Thanks, Jim.

Promag is junk, soft steel, weak springs, out-of spec.

Please do a search as this is a commonly-aked question.

I bought one for my Ruger P97. It works but I only use it as a range mag. Only factory mags for serious use. I've heard some of the other .45 mags work OK but that base plate is ugly. I've also heard there are lots of problems with most the 9MMs.

i agree...tried a couple different ones and they were not worth the tax i paid, much less the price of the mag...avoid them...

Even for "range use only," any malfunctions your gun has will reduce your confidence in it. I think you will be happier if you spend the few extra bucks for factory mags. An aftermarket brand that is good is Mec-Gar (who is actually an OEM supplier for several gun makers); this would be my one exception to "factory mags only."

I had a Pro-Mag for my SIG P228 about nine years ago. The only time that gun ever malfunctioned was with that mag. Don't clean the follower or floorplate with Gun Scrubber, either. :uhoh: ;)

You should have one ProMag for every gun you own so you can practice malfunction drills

Add me to the list of folks with much more bad ProMag experience than good. I've a couple of exceptions, the ProMag for my Kahr CW9 have all functioned 100% as have the pair I got for my Para P10 when CDNN closed them out for $10, after having issues with the factory P10 mag I tried a ProMag and promptly got another when it worked.

I suggest buying from a place like Midway that has a good return policy. ProMag has a "lifetime" warranty, but I've heard of folks spending more sending back bad mags than they did on the mag and still not getting a good one.

It sounds like I'm about the only one having good experiences with Promags...

I've used a number of their mags, including ones for the FEG GKK-45, Star Model 30, and Beretta Cougar...

All have worked well, although I can't speak to questions of longevity (having not shot enough rounds through any of them to test their lifespans)...

So far, so good...

My only experience has been with Sig 228 Pro-mags. I got 12 from CDNN during the AWB and used them extensively. While I have subsequently acquired OEM SIG mags, I have no problem using Promags for serious applications should the need arise.

My experience only, YMMV.

I have an older 4506; I really like the old style all-metal 645 magazines. if you can find them they might be cheaper and mine have always been reliable.
Cheers, TF

I have about 6 of their 1911 magazines other than the fact they are a tad oversized and don't allways drop free when empty they work fine .
