The AR just doesn't have enough length of pull in prone for me no matter what I've tried. I put the extra pad in the jacket. I'm 5'11".

If I go low and put my hand all the way to the sling swivel, I have to "hunch" my right shoulder forwards to get contact with the butt, which only makes contact with its top edge. In this manner most of the recoil is taken by my hand, but it causes things to slip and the muzzle proceeds downwards. Not stable enough.

If I choke up and put my ring finger back around the 8th hole of the heat shield, I can get more contact from my shoulder but then the gun moves horizontally with any little change in shoulder tension. If I "hunch" my shoulder and put my elbow outwards to get a nice pocket, my hand ends up way far forward of the trigger. And it still wobbles sideways.

I need more of the backwards tension to be taken by my shoulder.

I keep doing that :)

I do change the sling length to keep it "tight" regardless of my arm angle.

BTW, is a sling hook legal for "service" rifle? In the Rules, the main paragraph seems to allow it, but then one of the sub-paragraphs might take it away, depending on whether to terms used are meant to include "sling hooks" or not. I just dunno.

Hooks or buttons are not SR legal. Sometime later this week I'll give you the rule word for word...tired now.

Tight does not equal short or vice versa. I'm saying I think you need to shorten the sling. Seeing you in person would help a lot.

Also, make sure you're not high in the position. Try to get your left armpit on the ground or damned close...just high enough that the pistol grip is clear of the ground.

Rule 3.13 specifically allows hooks to "support the sling loop that is placed on the upper arm." Then 3.13 (b) prohibits things which "reinforce" or "tighten or lock." The grammar of section (b) does not seem to encompass "support." They could do a better job of writing with clarity.

I do have a very low position; sometimes I have to scootch up to make sure the grip is not on the ground.

I have one of the new Urethane coated CMP Turner slings. Of course there is a gap between the arm and the point where the loop comes together, but I have both keepers on the arm side with the hook shoved into them as tight as it will go.

I'm hooked onto the 7th or 8th hole; This is a 54" sling, I think.
