Anybody know of any ranges open to the public (or with open membership) in Vermont that has a decent pistol range? Being near the NY border is a plus. I tend to be the one to introduce people to firearms in my social circles, and can't introduce people to handguns in NY because of our arcane laws.
Furthermore - I've never actually transported firearms between states - I am permitted to bring my handguns via car into VT, given their lack of a requirement of a CCW permit to carry, correct?

In Vermont if you are legal under federal law you can carry handguns loaded and concealed no matter where you live. Loaded long guns in a vehicle are not legal and suppressors are not legal.

I suggest you look in the Bennington area for clubs. These would be closest to you. I am further north. Any decent sized club should be known to the NRA. I would check with them. There are many Vermont clubs that are not listed in any of the online resources I have checked.

Precision Valley Fish and Game Assn in Perkinsville Vermont. It's not too far off 91 in south central VT. They charge $50/year but offer a indoor and outdoor range.

I am a member at Precision Valley. It is a very good club but it is a lot further away from Albany then Bennington or Manchester.

Precision Valley looks like its just the sort of place I'd be interested in, but its about 2 hours from me while Bennington is 1 hour. I'll still consider it if I can't find anything similar closer.

Both Perkinsville and Precision Valley are a LONG way away from Albany NY.
The OP needs someplace around Bennington or elsewhere in the southwest part of Vermont, if he is to find a convenient location.
(Yes, I know there are many wonderful places to shoot in VT - but that wasn't the question).
