I purchased a 2018 Savage 220 Bolt-Action shotgun with accutrigger. I bought the correct Warne medium height rings and 2 piece mounts however the scope is too short for this set up to work.

I do not like 1 piece mounts, I think they look gaudy, are more material than necessary, and do not want the mounts to hang over the chamber and affect loading or unloading of the shotgun rounds.

I attempted to mount a Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12x40 to it and everything worked except the distance between the 2 mounts was too far. The front rings would have been up on the bell housing of the scope and not the tube.

I know that the Warne mounts for this particular shotgun use Weaver style base. I looked at Weaver themselves and they look cheap and are aluminum. They do not make steel ones for this gun.

I'm looking for a quality, extended 2 piece Weaver style base set for this rifle.

Does anyone make this?

***Also, is this considered a 'short action' model?

I don’t claim to know everything but know more than the average Joe when it comes to bases. Warne makes an extension base-M904
(https://warnescopemounts.com/product/m904m/ ) that will fit on the rear base. It might give you barely enough room. The M904 fits front and rear so you can actually buy two and use them as the front and rear bases. There will be some overhang though. The only other two piece option I know of is to find a longer scope. You actually might need two M904’s and a longer scope. And you might not be able to find a scope long enough.

I’ve stated on this website several times that I do not like the look of a one piece picatinny base on a bolt action rifle. I’ve made the switch though because best case it makes life much easier and worse case it’s the only solution.

I’ve mounted Warne picatinny bases on Savage 220’s and never had the shotgun brought back because the base interfered with operation.

Is the extension basically 1/2 of the regular M902 base set?

Warns specs the base as adding .55 extension. That would probably give u enough distance for your scope, but you would also be moving the whole thing forward about 1/4-1/2". The rear ring would also likely sit right over the back edge of the ejection port.

I’ve never measured it.

Sorry, I didn’t mean length.

I meant if you buy the M902 set it comes with a short base and long base, wondering if the extension is just the long base sold as an ‘extension’ when it’s just really the long base half of the set.

I use Leopold rifleman extended bases. I have only found them for flat receivers but if you buy 2 and use both front extended base should work for you.

Back in the day the front base was the same as the rear base(902) and Warne sold two extended bases, a 903 and a 904, the 904 being longer than the 903. It got to where most of the time the 902/902 didn’t work and people would have to buy an extension. So what Warne did was to start replacing one of the 902’s with a 903 even though the package still said 902/902. The 902 is a very common front base on rifles. It is what goes on Remington 700, Bergara, Weatherby Vanguard, Howa 1500 and others. The two piece base set for Remington 700 pattern receivers is 902/876 with 876 being the rear base. In these also the 902 was replaced with the 903. Any rifle no matter the make and model that requires a 902 front base now comes with what was originally a 903 but is now called a 902. The Savage pattern is 902/902 and is also the pattern used on the Ruger American and Remington 783. In this instance one of the bases, the rear is the original 902 and the front is the old 903. Since the hole distance is the same for front and rear bases(hence the 902/902 nomenclature) what is considered considered the front and rear bases are interchangeable. The 904 is longer than the 902 front base you have.

If I were you I’d swap the position of the bases you have. If that doesn’t work, and it most likely won’t, order a 904 and use it with the longer of the two bases you are already have. Play around with them, put the 904 on the front and the 902 on the rear. If that doesn’t work turn them around and then swap their places next. I’ve been where you are on more than one occasion, that’s why I now use EGW.

I’d stay with Warne if possible, better quality and I prefer the way the slots are cut over the Rifleman.

The Weaver #402 base is an extended base that will help.
I’ve got one on my M110 in .300RUM. NO PROBLEMS.
I’m using Weaver Quad rings. Never any zero drift even with loads exceeding 100gr of powder. 180gr bullets running in excess of 3,300fps.(26”bbl with .375” freebore).

Thanks. I’ve already tried the swapping the two original. Didn’t work. I also already returned them.

Would using two M904 extensions work?

I used Burris Xtreme Tactical base and Burris Zee low rings , with a Leupold VXII 2-7x33 . Mine is as far back as I can get it with this setup .

I had more adjustment with the EGW , but it put the scope to high .

I have a one piece mount, steel, and you'd have to point a 220 with Accutips at me to give it up. BTW, no matter how it is marketed, it is a rifle.....not a shotgun.

Success!

First I want to say that Warne customer service is awesome. Sean who works there went above and beyond to help me out.

I was able to put 2 of the longer Warne M902 bases together and it worked. Sean advised me that the M904 extension base and M902 longer base are the exact same length. So if you didn’t want to buy 2 whole base sets and part them out you could just buy 2 of the M904 extension bases.

I just do not like the look of the single rail mount and it has a lot of unnecessary metal also. I’m a fan of 2 piece mounts on bolt action guns, single piece mount is ok for ARs IMHO.

I’m a Warne customer for life now. When I get firearms for my kids they will have Warne mounts on them for sure.

My bad, I could have sworn the 904 is longer. Anyway, glad it worked out. I’ve called Warne customer service on occasion and always been impressed. A couple of times the head honcho Randy helped me, he’s incredible. Customer service is a big reason why I use Warne.

Yeah, their CS is top notch. Warne gained a customer for life.

Getting something to fit and getting something where it needs to be, could be two different things.
I'd have gotten a 1 pc multi slot aluminum and figured where things worked best, then cut it accordingly to make it a 2 piece.

Success!!! 80 yard broadside shot. Exit hole was bigger than entrance by a considerable amount.

Ended up using this ammo which is not only extremely accurate but reliable, abundant, and cheap. I got it for about $6.25 a box online. $6.99 at Fleet Farm when they have it in stock.
