I don't have any experience with 10mm, but I was reading where a fellow said he could shoot 40 S&W out of a 10mm gun. I know the 40 is a cut down 10mm but I didn't think you could shoot 40 out of a 10mm. Unless he is doing something stupid.

It's not advisable but it can be done in a situation such as wrol. Of course it will fail to cycle and could cause excessive wear in the chamber but same came be said for .380 out of a 9mm Luger or Largo. Final answer dont do it unless your life depends on it

It is possible. The cartridge will have to headspace on the extractor. Depending on how the extractor holds the case and how straight the cartridge sits in the chamber, there could quickly be a lot of copper and/or lead piling up on the ledge at the front of the actual chamber; there definitely will be powder fouling piling up there fast. Reliability is likely to be iffy. The gun probably isn't going to blow up or anything, but it's not how you want to roll.

The other way you can do this is with an aftermarket .40 conversion barrel made for your 10mm gun. 9x25 and .357 Sig will also work with the right barrel. Usually the original mag and recoil spring will work fine.

You can also take a .40 S&W case and load the completed cartridge to 10mm length. This doesn't fix the problem in it's entirety, but it has been done.

I have a friend that shot a lot of .40 out of a 10mm Witness.

The gun ran fine, and he didn't blow it up in the time he was doing it, but personally, I would never do it. It is too easy to buy a .40 barrel and have the correct chamber.

not a good idea.

a lot of factory 10mm isn't loaded all that hot compared to .40s&w. so shooting it isn't hard. painful or recoil harsh by any means if you can handle .40. now cost....40 is much cheaper most times....i get that, but i'd stick to 10mm in your 10mm pistol. if you really want to do it, i'd buy the .40 conversion barrel like others have suggested.

A lot of 'smart' people and 'experts' have advised against it. I suppose I agree with them to a point. Still, just to see what would happen, I have entered numerous IDPA competitions and such with my Glock 20, and fired .40 SW for the whole thing, just to see what would happen. Still haven't hand any issue firing .40 in the big 10mm. No conversion barrel, either.
