I use a considerable amount of coated (Hi-Tek) bullets in 9mm. In the past I have not paid any attention to the actual color of the bullets. Bayou, for example usually offers 3 colors, Black and Blue offers 5 colors while The Blue Bullets co only offers coated bullets in 1 color; Blue.

So my question is, as far as preformance is concerned (accuracy, speed and so forth), does the color of the bullet coating make any difference? This assumes all other parameters are equal (weight, size, profile, hardness etc.). Thanks in advance.

Bummer. I don't see how looks will make them shoot better, and the coverage with the gold color is just fine, and they shoot great. They might lose customers going to a color others offer.

But to the OP, I can't see how the color could matter, only the quality of the lead bullet and the quality of the application of the coating matters.

There is a difference in the various Hi-Tek coatings. The metallic based ones can handle a higher velocity. But for 9mm any of them will work. I currently have seven colors of Hi-Tek that I'm using.

There are differences in the application...some colors cure faster...and slickness ( less an issue in 9mm than in .38Spl), but it shouldn't affect bullet performance if the coatings are uniform in hardness and thickness

Some bullet manufacturers to a better job of coating than others. I prefer a nice uniform coating regardless of color.

I am still using the first generation of Hi-tek coating that was sold here. As far as coverage, you can melt the lead inside the coating, then poke a hole in it and it will run out.

Probably not applicable here but once a range officer suggested I use different colored magic markers on a group of bullets to determine sequence on a distant target.

At my level, I see no difference in the shooting.
I ordered some Bayous when they were short on coating, said "any color" and got "gold." I had an earlier batch of their standard green. I have a bunch of BBIs which are all black. I shot some Missouri bullets in their dark red. That was interesting, the bullets felt oily. I asked and they said it was intentional, the coat and cure process they use.

I know for a fact that black bullets penetrate further and are much more evil, ie black talon...
I have no scientific proof though :uhoh:
:D

I prefer SNS's new red color. It matches the grips of one of my nineteen elevens. It helps me feel more put together. Though with the new Dan Wesson's VZgrips I may need to get a black color to match. Or silver.

I suppose it's like a woman's shoes, some look better than others, but they all cover your feet.
