I plan on selling my Glock 17 to a friend who lives in California.
I live in Oregon.

I was thinking that I could drive down there to visit for vacation, and at the same time I could sell him the Glock and do a transfer of title with a local dealer.

My friend called me just today and told me that this is not legal in California. The dealer he talked to said that I would have to go through a transfer dealer in Oregon, so that the Glock would be shipped down to another transfer dealer in California. Only in this way would my friend would be able to take possesion of the Glock.

Is this true that it is illegal for me to travel down to California and perform a transfer of title to my friend with a local dealer down there ?

transfer

It is my understanding that you can not transfer a firearm across state lines without going through an FFL. You can ship it to his FFL in Calif and have him/her do the transfer but you can't drive it across state lines yourself.

ATF's website should help

Wouldn't the dealer in CA be the FFL you need to do the transfer? I did something similar a few years ago & it went fine. You may just need to call another FFL or call the CA DOJ to confirm the process. I would think that since the G17 is on the approved list it would be a simple transfer...
Now, the sale is w/o mags right *wink* *wink* ;) ;) Your friend needs to buy 10 rounders, right ;) since hi cap mags are verboten in CA

A PPT in California can only be done between California residents. Any other transfer must be from FFL to FFL. The Calf. FFL can accept an approved gun from an individual but he puts it into his stock and he becomes the seller to you. You'll need to find a willing FFL to do this.........they do exist.
