Question about shooting glasses

Prices for shooting glasses range from around $7.00 to more than ten times that.

I've always bought the ones in the lower price range. I figured as long as they are polycarbonate lenses they're as good as any.

Was at an outdoor range when a bullet jacket sliver hit the arm of another shooter causing bleeding. I would not want that to happen to anyone's eyes.

Are some glasses safer than others?

I think the biggest difference you'll find between the different prices will be optical quality. However, some of the fancy ones do have ballistic ratings above the norm.

for instance the lenses in wiley x's can take a hit from a .22lr or .25 acp, not to mention shrapnel from explosions

I find glasses tend to be like anything else in life - buy cheap, get cheap.

Obviously there are some exceptions to that rule, but generally cheap is cheap. Considering we're talking about your eyes - it's one of those things where maybe spending a few extra bucks might not be such a bad idea...

Big problem with most of the cheap shooting glasses is the temples - those pieces on the side that go back over your ears - are too thick or they bow out from your head. When you put on your muffs, the thick temples break the muff's seals. Your 30 db muffs are suddenly 18 db muffs and your ears are ringing.

Most of the AO safetys are passably decent. If they have an ANSI Z87.1 rating, you're good to go.

I checked and I have AO glasses. One with yellow lenses and one with gray.
As I recall, each was around $15. I'll look up their ANSI rating.

As far as any muff problem

like Japle mentioned......wear ear plug type ear protection instead of muffs. These seem to work fine.

I was thinking more like 7-8 bucks for the AOs. I am extremely picky about shooting glasses, optical quality wise. I currently have a couple pairs of Zeiss glasses that I dearly love. Got them on clearance.

I've found this particular pair of AO safety glasses to be quite decent. They used to sell them at Walmart. Northerntool usually has a good selection as well.

In case anyone else wants to check, both my pairs have Z87 either on the inside of the bridge support or on the frame. The gray pair has Z87+ which indicates they meet "high velocity impact requirements".

After looking around the 'net, there are a lot of $7.00 Z87+ glasses on the market. So, never mind, carry on.
