Im really ready to take up Hi Power shooting, I'm moving to a location that actually has these kinds of matches locally, so in preparation for that my question is; can I build an NRA Hi Power match legal AR15 using a removable rear sight/ carry handle flat top upper, and a removable front sight, that would attach to the front gas block to compete with?

Thanks for the response. Dang it anyway, I was hopeful that it would be possible to have a match quality accurate AR that I could also scope up for predator hunting and compete with as well.

2000 rounds. Interesting, my Navy Match Garand has many more than that with out noticeable accuracy deterioration or significant TE

Thanks for the link. I'm pretty stoked that finally, I won't have to drive 200 miles to attend a match and can shoot matches I have been wanting to for years.

As post #8 stated, optics (4.5x max) are now allowed for CMP service rifles and the NRA is sure to follow. Thus you can use your rifle for both purposes, maybe swapping optics if you don't think 4.5x is enough for a varmint rig.

Even if you are hell bent on shooting with irons, the fixed front sight will only show up as a shadow in the bottom of your field of view when you mount your optic for hunting, really not a biggie.

There is almost no configuration of AR15 which would be illegal under NRA highpower rifle rules.

The most common ILLEGAL component on AR's is the blasty muzzle brake.

Flash hiders are permitted.

Muzzle BRAKES are NOT permitted.

If you want to shoot an AR configured as CMP-legal SERVICE RIFLE, you need to read the rules. The rules for SERVICE RIFLE recently changed to allow optics and certain other "modifications" that allow you make the gun no longer have to look like the obsolete M16.

After 2000 rounds in 22 caliber benchrest rifles shooting the same charge weights as the .223, they also have opened up their average group size about 30% By the time they open up about 50% and their average groups size is now about 3/10ths MOA at 100 yards, the barrel's set back or replaced. A 3000 round barrel life for 22 caliber match cartridges producing best results is about normal; some won't make it that long if hot loads are used.

Same barrel life for the .308 Win in match rifles. Sierra Bullets changes their match grade barrels testing 30 caliber bullets in .308 Win cases after about 3000 rounds, too.

Regarding throat erosion, I've measured the throat erosion on four 7.62 NATO Garand barrels. They gauge went in about 1/10th inch past zero for every thousand rounds of barrel life. When the gauge read 3, top ranked team members got a new barrel. if it went in past that but not over 5, the rifle was relegated to use by new shooters starting out as a competitive shooter. Any barrel that gauged 5 or more was replaced. New barrels airgauged .3078" groove diameter or smaller were used for match grade Garands.
